Sichuan

Sichuan combines a major lowland city, Buddhist heritage and vast mountain prefectures. A good first trip begins in Chengdu, adds Leshan, and then chooses one demanding landscape: Jiuzhaigou, the valleys of Aba, or the high roads of Ganzi. Trying to collect all three creates long road days and repeated altitude changes.

Choose your region

• Chengdu basin: pandas, tea houses, museums, food and easy day trips. This is the most flexible first base.
• Leshan and nearby heritage: the Giant Buddha is a focused rail-linked extension; combine it with Emei only when you can give the mountain enough time.
• Northern Aba: Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong form a scenic journey with high-elevation sections and reservation-sensitive transport.
• Western Aba: Mount Siguniang and Bipenggou suit travelers who want valleys and mountain walking without crossing deep into Ganzi.
• Ganzi: Kangding, Tagong, Hailuogou or Daocheng Yading require a dedicated road trip and conservative pacing.
• Zigong: choose Zigong for dinosaur, salt-industry and lantern culture rather than as a transfer stop.

How many days

With four days, stay in Chengdu and take one day trip. With seven days, spend three or four nights in Chengdu, add Leshan, then choose Jiuzhaigou or a shorter Aba route. With ten days, keep Chengdu as the transport anchor and give one mountain region three or four nights.

Daocheng Yading or a broader Ganzi road trip deserves at least a week beyond Chengdu. Do not count a six-hour road transfer as a sightseeing day, and avoid rising from the basin to a strenuous high-altitude hike immediately after arrival.

Cities and bases

Stay in central Chengdu for urban days and separate full-day excursions. Leshan can be a day trip, but an overnight helps if you also want local food or Mount Emei. For Jiuzhaigou, stay close to the valley entrance and treat Huanglong as a separate, weather-dependent day.

In Aba and Ganzi, the named prefecture covers a huge area. Mount Siguniang, Jiuzhaigou, Kangding and Daocheng are distinct bases rather than neighboring attractions. Check the precise pickup town and hotel location before booking any shared vehicle.

Routes through the province

A balanced seven-day first trip

1. Arrive in Chengdu; walk a central neighborhood and recover from travel.
2. Visit the Panda Base early, then Wenshu Monastery or the east city.
3. Choose Sanxingdui or Dujiangyan as one full excursion.
4. Travel to Leshan for the Giant Buddha; stay overnight or return to Chengdu.
5. Transfer to Jiuzhaigou or your chosen Aba base.
6. Give the main valley or mountain landscape a full day.
7. Keep the final day flexible for a second landscape or the return journey.

If weather reliability matters more than variety, replace the mountain section with Zigong, another Chengdu day and a slower Leshan stay.

When to visit

Spring and autumn are generally comfortable in the Chengdu basin. Summer is humid and busy but suits many green mountain landscapes; heavy rain can affect roads and visibility. Winter is quieter in the cities, while high areas can be icy, snowy or closed in part.

The right season differs by elevation. Check the destination itself, not “Sichuan weather,” and keep a substitute day when a cableway, valley road or viewpoint depends on conditions.

Getting there and around

Chengdu has the strongest air and rail connections and should anchor most first trips. Fast rail works well for Leshan, Zigong, Dujiangyan and several gateway stations. Mountain sections still depend on buses, drivers or organized transfers; journey times are vulnerable to traffic, roadworks and weather.

Never place a nonrefundable flight immediately after a long mountain-road return. Carry the hotel name, destination and pickup point in Chinese, and confirm whether a quoted transfer ends at the scenic entrance, county town or railway station.

Where to stay

In Chengdu, stay near a metro line and choose the neighborhood for the city days, not for one remote excursion. At scenic bases, prioritize a practical pickup location, heating or air-conditioning appropriate to the season, and a clear luggage policy. A beautiful rural stay can add hours to an already long transfer.

What to book first

Reserve scarce entry slots and intercity transport first: the Panda Base, major museums, Jiuzhaigou and any fixed mountain transfer. Then book refundable hotels around those dates. Recheck weather, road and scenic-area notices close to departure.
