Aba Prefecture: choose your mountain landscape before choosing the road

Aba (Ngawa) Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture is one of Sichuan's strongest mountain regions: sharp snow peaks, deep forest valleys, high lakes, prayer flags and long scenic roads all fit within the prefecture, but not within one compact base. The best trip starts by choosing one landscape cluster and giving it enough time.

For a first visit, Mount Siguniang is the clearest two-night anchor. Shuangqiao Valley makes the alpine scale accessible with a sightseeing bus and selective walks; Changping adds forest and a longer walking day; Haizi offers an open grassland viewpoint or a much more demanding specialist continuation. Bipenggou works best as a separate extension, while Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong belong to a different northern Sichuan journey.

Choose the Aba landscape that fits your trip

The three Mount Siguniang valleys have separate gates, tickets and visit styles. Read the Mount Siguniang guide before paying, then open the individual Shuangqiao, Changping or Haizi guide for the day you actually want.

Start with two nights at Mount Siguniang

Day 1 — Reach Mount Siguniang Town and settle in. Use the town as the base, confirm the next morning's valley ticket and check the exact distance from your lodging to the correct gate. The town is also commonly listed under its older name, Rilong.

Day 2 — Make Shuangqiao the first mountain day. Its sightseeing bus does the long climb, leaving you to choose walking sections around the weather, altitude and energy you actually have.

Day 3 — Choose one second experience. Pick Changping for forest and a longer walk, or Haizi for a short open-valley hike. A second full valley is more rewarding than trying to combine two separate gates in one day.

The landscape is also part of a living Tibetan and Qiang region. Approach stupas, prayer flags, villages and local customs as places with meaning rather than photo props, and follow posted guidance at religious and community sites.

Add Bipenggou as a separate extension

Bipenggou contributes a different mountain day: forest, streams and lake layers reached through a scenic-area transport system. It is not in Mount Siguniang Town, so the useful decision is whether to give it another base or use a clearly specified Chengdu round trip.

AMap's planning model checked on 21 August 2026 measured the route from the Mount Siguniang Town civic anchor to the Bipenggou Visitor Centre at 120.2 km/about 2 hours 41 minutes by car, with no public-transit result returned. This is a route estimate, not a shuttle or timetable. Check road and weather conditions for the travel date before linking the two regions.

For a same-day return from Chengdu, compare the exact Bipenggou day-tour product on Trip.com. The dated small-group, English-guide option included city-centre pickup within Chengdu's Third Ring Road, return transport, admission and the main sightseeing bus; verify the selected package, pickup boundary and whether optional upper electric carts are included before paying.

Keep Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong as a separate northern trip

Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong deserve their own transport plan, lodging base and mountain-day buffer. They are not practical add-ons from Mount Siguniang Town. If those blue-green lakes and travertine pools are the priority, use the Jiuzhaigou trip-planning hub and build that package from Chengdu independently.

This route appears here because both landscapes sit within Aba Prefecture, but its Goukou base and Huanglongjiuzhai transport remain separate from the Mount Siguniang cluster.

Book in the order that protects the mountain days

  1. Choose the valley or scenic area first. This determines the correct gate, transport layer and energy level.
  2. Reserve the dated admission or exact tour product. Compare current Mount Siguniang valley tickets and included-tour options, remembering that one valley ticket does not cover all three valleys.
  3. Choose lodging by its exact map pin. Search hotels near Mount Siguniang on Trip.com, then compare the property location with your chosen valley gate rather than relying on the destination name alone.
  4. Add the intercity road plan last. Leave margin for mountain weather, road controls and the final connection.

Road, altitude and document checks

Mount Siguniang Town sits at roughly 3,160–3,200 m, and scenic transport can gain altitude quickly. Give the first evening a gentle pace, carry layers and rain and sun protection, and reassess the day if headache, dizziness or breathing difficulty develops; ask scenic-area staff or medical services for help when needed.

Road journey times are planning models, not promises. Confirm the exact pickup point, vehicle, luggage arrangement and latest road conditions with the operator, especially when a train or flight depends on the same day's transfer.

International visitors are received in the region, but the public notices reviewed did not document a reproducible passport checkout and gate-entry flow. Before paying, confirm the accepted passport field, payment method and staffed entry procedure, and carry the original document used for the reservation.

Continue with the detailed guides

The trip that flows is simple: pick one base, protect one complete mountain day, and let the second day deepen the same landscape rather than stretching across the prefecture.

Make the five decisions

Plan Aba Prefecture without adding random stops

Choose the trip shape first, then use live booking and transport information for your exact date.

How Many Days?
  • One Mount Siguniang day: choose Shuangqiao only. It can work as a long Chengdu return product, but it is not a complete three-valley visit.
  • Three days/two nights: strongest first Mount Siguniang shape—arrival/base night, Shuangqiao day, then Changping or a deliberately short Haizi day.
  • Four days/three nights: adds weather/road margin or a second walking valley without compressing the Chengdu mountain-road transfer.
  • Bipenggou is a separate Li County product. Add at least one more day and a confirmed self-drive/transfer and lodging plan; it is not an automatic same-base add-on.
  • Cut-first rule: choose one Mount Siguniang walking valley, or keep Bipenggou for another trip, before turning every day into a long road plus a high-altitude visit.
Choose Your Route
  • Mount Siguniang first visit: Mount Siguniang Town base → Shuangqiao ride-high/selective-return day → Changping front sampler or full walking day.
  • Lowest trail effort: Shuangqiao sightseeing bus to the high end, then one currently open upper walk and selected return stops.
  • Forest walking: Changping's 7 km connector → front sampler, extended forest day or early full Muluozi product with a pre-set turnaround.
  • Open high-country: Haizi ordinary front-valley day; remote lake continuation only after current route, registration/guide, weather and return checks.
  • Lake-and-forest alternative: Bipenggou scenic bus → easy two-upper-vehicle product or one verified open walking link. Current operations and last return control the choice.
Book These First
  • Mount Siguniang valleys: buy the named valley, date and internal-transport product. Shuangqiao, Changping and Haizi are not one interchangeable ticket.
  • Mount Siguniang Town lodging: verify the exact property pin, chosen valley gate, morning transfer, international-guest acceptance and cancellation terms.
  • Bipenggou: reserve through the current official channel; ordinary admission, sightseeing bus and optional upper electric vehicles are distinct components.
  • Horse or outdoor product: confirm the official counter/company, named endpoint, one-way/return, insurance, capacity, current route status and registration/guide requirements.
  • International passport: these attractions receive inbound visitors, but the public official pages reviewed did not expose a reproducible checkout/gate workflow. Confirm the passport field and staffed-entry procedure before a fragile connection.
Prepare entry, payments and transport
Explore by Area
  • Mount Siguniang Town shared base; Shuangqiao's separate gate and bus valley; Changping's connector and forest walking product; Haizi's front-valley versus specialist boundary; Bipenggou visitor centre, lower lake/forest layer and conditional upper vehicle/walking product; Jiuzhaigou/Huanglong as a separate northern Aba package.
Where to Go Next

Chengdu is the primary gateway. Jiuzhaigou/Huanglong is a separate multi-day northern Aba package, while Ganzi requires its own long-road plan. A Mount Siguniang–Bipenggou pairing is suitable only with exact-date road status and a confirmed self-drive/transfer plan; no public shuttle is inferred.
