Kangding: settle into the river city, then choose your mountain day
Kangding (康定, Kāngdìng) is Ganzi's most flexible first base. The river-centre gives an arrival afternoon of bridges, mountain walls, warm food and practical supply stops; the next morning can open into a contained Mugecuo lake day or a broader road journey through Xinduqiao to Tagong.
That choice is the city's strength. Mugecuo uses managed scenic transport to deliver lake, forest and hot-spring-area landscapes in one day. Xinduqiao–Tagong is a road-and-place product built around changing valley light, grassland, Tagong town and its monastery. Keep both nights in Kangding to do one well, or add another night to enjoy both without compressing the arrival.

Arrival day: let Kangding work as a city
Kangding's centre sits at about 2,560 m in a narrow mountain valley. Start at Love Song Square, follow the river and bridges through the active centre, then use the evening for a proper meal and supplies rather than adding another high stop.
AMap's model checked on 21 August 2026 placed Kangding Coach Station about 1.7 km/23 minutes on foot or 1.8 km/10 minutes by car from Love Song Square. A local Route 2 result also appeared, but the model does not establish live frequency or the best stop for a particular hotel.

For dinner, choose by the evening you need. Dumplings, noodles and soup suit a quiet arrival; a Tibetan meal adds a stronger local flavour when you have time to order and share; liangfen makes a lighter snack. Favour a busy, clean dining room near the hotel over crossing the city for a single famous shop.
Mugecuo: ride high, then choose the descent
Mugecuo (木格措), officially the Kangding Love Song Scenic Area, is the most contained highland day from Kangding. Its managed landscape runs from roughly 2,900 m to 3,800 m, bringing together the upper Mugecuo lake, Rhododendron Gorge, Seven-Color Lake, grassland and a hot-spring area.
Use this visit as a flexible sequence:
- Reach the exact Mugecuo Visitor Centre and confirm the day's route and last return before boarding.
- Take the scenic vehicle to the upper lake, pause for the view and judge the temperature, visibility and how the rapid height gain feels.
- Select the lower stops that add a different landscape. Seven-Color Lake, forest or the hot-spring area can shape the descent when the current route serves them; there is no need to force every stop.
- Keep enough time for the final vehicle and the road back to Kangding.
AMap's driving model checked on 21 August 2026 measured Love Song Square to the visitor centre at 19.3 km/about 35 minutes, with no public-transit result returned. This is a route estimate, not a shuttle promise or operating timetable.

Compare current Mugecuo products on Trip.com. Choose an option only when the checkout explicitly lists both admission and the round-trip sightseeing bus if that is the product you need. Recheck the visit date and inclusions before paying; cruises, hot-spring experiences, horse rides, meals, guides and transfers from Kangding should be treated as separate unless the selected package explicitly states otherwise.
Xinduqiao and Tagong: make the road the experience
The Xinduqiao–Tagong day suits travellers who want an open landscape rather than a managed scenic-area circuit. Xinduqiao is a road corridor where seasonal colour, weather and light do much of the work. Tagong adds a real town, monastery and grassland setting beneath the surrounding mountains.
AMap driving models checked on 21 August 2026 measured central Kangding to the Xinduqiao town anchor at 76.3 km/about 2 hours 3 minutes, then Xinduqiao to Tagong Grassland at 36.4 km/about 49 minutes. Neither search returned a public-transit route. Treat the results as road-scale models, not a live itinerary.
Build the day with a verified vehicle and a driver who can confirm legal, safe stopping places. Keep the landscape selective: one good Xinduqiao valley stop, time in Tagong town and the monastery, and a grassland view are more useful than a string of improvised roadside coordinates. An overnight in Xinduqiao or Tagong makes sense only when it supports the next day's direction and the exact property and road plan are confirmed.

Tagong Monastery is an active religious place. Dress and move quietly, follow the site's circulation and photography rules, and do not treat worshippers, monks or local residents as staged subjects. On grazing land, remain on permitted access, leave room for livestock and do not fly a drone without explicit permission.
Stay where the chosen day begins cleanly
- Central Kangding is the flexible default. Search Kangding hotels on Trip.com, then compare the property pin with Love Song Square, the coach station and the confirmed pickup. Verify heating, parking, luggage storage and international-guest handling with the exact property.
- Mugecuo/Zhonggu area suits an intentional scenic-area or hot-spring stay. Search Mugecuo-area hotels on Trip.com, but confirm the exact pin: the search label does not guarantee walking access to the visitor centre, a gate shuttle, a hot spring or acceptance of a particular identity document.
Reaching Kangding
Kangding Coach Station is the clearest city road-arrival anchor. From the airport's domestic-arrivals point, AMap's 21 August 2026 driving model to Love Song Square measured 44.2 km/about 1 hour 28 minutes, with no public-transit result. Confirm the airport transfer, pickup point and vehicle before arrival rather than relying on an assumed bus.
There is no operating passenger railway into Kangding. For a Chengdu road arrival, confirm the current coach or private-transfer product, its departure point, luggage rule and destination stop directly with the operator. Mountain traffic, rest stops and controls can make actual door-to-door time longer than a map model.
Altitude, weather and live-operation checks
Kangding's lower city base helps create a measured first evening, but Mugecuo's vehicle-assisted day can still gain more than 1,000 m quickly. Eat, hydrate and carry warm layers plus rain and sun protection. If headache, dizziness or breathing difficulty develops, stop increasing exertion, reassess the day and ask scenic-area staff or medical services for help when needed.
Rain and flood risk matter across the broader May–September flood season. Snow or ice can affect exposed roads such as the Zheduo corridor in colder periods, and fire-prevention controls can restrict access or behaviour during dry seasons. Check the current road, weather and scenic-area notice before departure; obey police and staff instructions and avoid hazardous night driving.
A reproducible passport purchase and gate-entry flow is not currently published for Mugecuo. Carry the original passport you use for the reservation and confirm the accepted checkout field and staffed entry procedure before paying. For live scenic-area confirmation, the operator publishes 0836-2828218.
Return to the Ganzi planning hub before adding Daocheng Yading, Hailuogou or another long-road base. Kangding works best when its role stays clear: a rewarding arrival city and one well-chosen mountain day at a time.
