Mount Qingcheng
Mount Qingcheng is a full mountain day near Dujiangyan. The first decision is essential: Front Mountain and Rear Mountain are separate scenic areas with separate tickets, gates and transport. Front Mountain is the better first choice for Taoist heritage and a defined circuit; Rear Mountain is for longer forest, stream and stair hiking. Do not attempt both in one normal day.
Choose before you book
Front Mountain
Choose the front if you want historic Taoist sites, a clearer visitor circuit and the option to reduce climbing with the Yuecheng Lake boat and cableway. Allow 4–6 hours inside, plus transport from Chengdu.
Rear Mountain
Choose the rear if hiking, ravines, waterfalls and wet forest paths are the purpose of the day. Routes can be longer and more weather-sensitive. Tai'an Ancient Town, trailheads and cableway stations belong to a different arrival plan from Front Mountain. Confirm current trail closures and the last workable descent before entering.
A practical Front Mountain route
- Enter through the current Front Mountain visitor gate and check the operating board.
- Pass the lower heritage area around Jianfu Palace, then continue toward Yuecheng Lake.
- Choose whether to walk or use the lake boat and Qingcheng cableway for the middle ascent. These are separate services and can stop for weather, maintenance or capacity.
- Continue toward Shangqing Palace and Laojun Pavilion only if time, visibility and legs allow.
- Descend through the signed temple route, commonly passing sites such as Chaoyang Cave, Tianshi Cave and Natural Picture, subject to current one-way controls.
The clearer diagram below is an orientation aid, not a live operations map. Follow current signs and staff if its line, stop or direction differs.

Booking and passport checks
As checked on September 9, 2026, the Qingcheng Mountain–Dujiangyan scenic-area system uses real-name timed reservations. Published Front Mountain entry windows were 08:00–10:00, 10:00–12:00, 12:00–14:00 and 14:00–17:00, with seasonal adjustments possible. Official guidance says foreign visitors can select a passport or foreign permanent residence permit and use the staffed/manual lane; the staffed ticket window is the fallback if the online identity flow fails.
Front Mountain adult admission was listed at CNY 80 and Rear Mountain at CNY 20 when checked. Boats, cableways, sightseeing vehicles and transfers are separate unless the selected product explicitly includes them. Recheck the official 青城山都江堰 or 悦游都江堰 channel before departure, and carry the original document used to book.

Getting there from Chengdu
Rail from Xipu to Qingchengshan station is often the simplest public-transport spine. Buy the train first, then verify the current connection from the station to your chosen gate. A vehicle marked for Rear Mountain does not solve a Front Mountain arrival, and vice versa. On the return, leave margin before the last useful connection; mountain queues and weather can break a tight schedule.

Weather, crowds and safety
- Wear shoes with grip. Stone steps and timber paths become slippery after rain.
- Carry water, rain protection and a light layer. Conditions change quickly under the forest canopy.
- At high capacity the scenic area may pause ticket sales or entry. A reservation does not make holiday queues disappear.
- Do not leave marked trails or trust an old shortcut post. Trail, cableway and boat closures override every saved route.
- A same-day Dujiangyan plus Front Mountain plan is possible only with an early start and strict priorities. Give each site its own day if you want a relaxed visit.
