Zigong: dinosaurs, deep salt wells and a city made for lantern light
Zigong (自贡) offers three unusually specific reasons to travel: Jurassic fossils preserved at the site where they were found, a well-salt story told through engineering and extravagant merchant architecture, and—when an edition is live—one of China's great lantern evenings. Add a distinctive food culture and the city becomes much more than a stop between Chengdu and Chongqing.
The strongest first visit is two days and one night. That gives the Dinosaur Museum and the salt-history pair separate daytime space, while a confirmed lantern edition can become the evening anchor. With one day, choose one major theme and enjoy it properly.

The key is geography: the Salt Museum, Lantern Park and Ziliujing old-city side form a compact central cluster, while the Dinosaur Museum, Shenhai Well and China Lantern World are separate transfers. A short list produces a better visit than treating all three identities as one walking circuit.
A complete year-round two-day route
The flagship separates fossils from the salt story and keeps Shenhai Well as a useful route stop without manufacturing another guide. A future live lantern edition can replace the first evening only after its own dates, entry and return plan are confirmed.

Where to base yourself
Choose the room after choosing the first morning:
- Downtown and the old-city side work best for the salt museum, Lantern Park and short heritage walks. Check the exact property pin, hills, station connection and late-evening noise rather than relying on a broad “city centre” label.
- Huashang and the modern commercial side offer a wider concentration of restaurants and familiar hotel inventory, but usually add a car journey to the historic cluster.
- A festival-night stay still needs an edition-specific return plan. A hotel description does not prove a shuttle or an easy walk from China Lantern World.
Compare Zigong stays on Trip.com, then confirm the exact location, international-guest policy, cancellation terms and connection to the product you chose.
Eat around the route you actually take
Zigong food is a reason to leave time between tickets. Useful categories include fresh-pot rabbit, cold-eaten rabbit, dipping dishes, tofu meals, noodles and fish. Start with smaller portions, ask how spicy a dish will be, and confirm whether fish or another main ingredient is priced by weight before ordering.
Do not cross the city for a single viral counter. A busy place with visible turnover, clear prices and a location close to the day's final stop usually creates a more enjoyable food period.

Getting in and around
Zigong Station and Zigong North Station are different places. Use the station name printed on the live rail ticket, then open the matching map pin:
- Zigong Station passenger entrance to the neutral downtown planning anchor was 13.6 km / about 21 minutes by car in an AMap model checked on 21 August 2026.
- Zigong North Station passenger entrance to that anchor was 2.5 km / about 8 minutes by car in the same dated model. The map does not establish which passenger trains currently call there.
- Zigong Coach Terminal to the downtown anchor was 4.8 km / about 13 minutes by car. Confirm destinations and departures with the live operator.
These are point-to-point planning estimates, not live traffic, train schedules or promised bus and shuttle services. For the outer attractions, a confirmed road transfer is the simplest planning baseline.
What is live now
- The Dinosaur Museum reopened on 28 July 2026 with the Dinosaur Relics Hall and Dinosaur Exploration Hall forming the current visit.
- The Salt Industry History Museum is the reliable first chapter of the salt story. If buying through Trip.com, the selected listing covers museum admission only—not Shenhai Well, an English guide, transport, food or a night cruise.
- The 32nd lantern-festival edition ended after 10 June 2026. As checked on 21 August 2026, the next edition's dates, tickets, sessions and entry procedure had not been announced.
- Foreign-passport checkout and staffed-entry details remain insufficiently documented across the attractions. Test the live document field, carry the original passport used for the booking and leave time for staffed help.

Zigong works best when you choose one clear daytime story, preserve a proper meal and add the lantern night only when it genuinely exists. That rhythm lets fossils, salt and light feel like three dimensions of one city rather than three deadlines.
