Zigong Lantern Festival: build a full evening around light and craft
The Zigong International Dinosaur Lantern Festival (自贡国际恐龙灯会, Zìgòng Guójì Kǒnglóng Dēnghuì) is worth planning around when an edition is live. Its appeal is scale: traditional lantern-making techniques expand into illuminated landscapes, animals, architecture and contemporary scenes large enough to occupy most of an evening. It works best as a dedicated night product after a lighter daytime visit, not as a brief photo stop.
The festival is seasonal. As of 21 August 2026, it was between editions: the 32nd edition at China Lantern World ended after operations on 10 June 2026, and no reviewed announcement had established the next edition's dates, tickets or visitor schedule. Use this guide to understand the experience now, then activate the entry–route–exit plan only after a new edition is formally announced.

Current state: between editions
China Lantern World (中华彩灯大世界, Zhōnghuá Cǎidēng Dà Shìjiè) is the festival venue, not an attraction to assume is open nightly all year. The most useful planning move now is to keep the evening uncommitted until a new edition has all of these:
- an organizer announcement with exact opening and closing dates;
- a current ticket guide with bookable dates and refund terms;
- the operating sessions, entrance and weather policy for your date;
- a usable booking/document path; and
- a confirmed way to leave after the visit.
Do not revive the previous edition's price, timed sessions, gate, performance list, road controls, buses or last departures. Those belonged to specific dates and cannot describe the next festival.

When an edition is live
1. Confirm the exact festival product
Look for admission to the named Zigong International Dinosaur Lantern Festival at China Lantern World on your selected date. A photography service, generic city photo package, Fantawild product or old unavailable listing is not festival admission.
Check what the ticket actually includes and whether it names a session. The next edition may not reuse any earlier ticket structure. If the booking flow does not explain foreign-passport details, confirm the accepted document and gate process before payment and carry the original document used for the booking.
2. Choose compact or full-evening depth
A compact visit works when you want the principal illuminated groups and need a conservative exit. A full-evening visit suits travelers who want to notice material, construction, traditional forms and the shift into contemporary large-scale scenes rather than moving only between headline photographs.
Use the current edition map to select the route. The themed zones and circulation can change each year, so no old route screenshot should decide the order.

Look closely as well as widely. Repeated forms, patterned surfaces and the structure supporting a large light group reveal the craft behind the spectacle. This lantern group belongs to an earlier edition and is not a promise that the same installation will return.
3. Set the entrance and exit before traveling
The ticket or organizer notice must control the entrance. Save the Chinese gate name and current navigation pin, then confirm the finishing point and return transport. A festival evening becomes fragile when the visitor arrives at a general venue marker or waits until closing to improvise a ride.
4. Let current conditions control the evening
Weather, crowd controls and temporary operating changes can affect admission, programming and the route. Check the organizer's current notice on the visit day. Preserve enough margin to shorten the route without rushing, and follow on-site signs if they differ from a saved plan.
China Lantern Museum between editions
The China Lantern Museum (中国彩灯博物馆, Zhōngguó Cǎidēng Bówùguǎn) is the permanent daytime companion, not the festival venue. Its galleries explain lantern history and craft, making it useful when China Lantern World has no live edition or when you want context before a festival evening.
The museum's service page, checked on 21 August 2026, listed Tuesday–Sunday 09:00–17:30, entry ending 17:00, and Monday closure except on statutory holidays. The contact number is 0813-2118550. Recheck its current notice before travel; foreign-passport reservation handling was not established in the reviewed guidance.
Pair the permanent museum with the downtown Salt Industry History Museum for a compact culture day. The permanent galleries give craft context, but they do not replace the scale or night atmosphere of a live festival edition.
Getting to China Lantern World when it is live
Use the current ticket or organizer notice first. For preliminary planning, AMap distinguishes China Lantern World Visitor Centre (中华彩灯大世界游客中心) from the broad venue marker. The main venue's current map label says access is paused, which supports caution but does not establish a future opening date or gate.
AMap's 21 August 2026 road models measured:
- downtown planning anchor -> visitor centre: 8.4 km / about 13 minutes;
- Zigong Dinosaur Museum Visitor Centre -> visitor centre: 6.4 km / about 15 minutes.
These are dated road estimates, not live traffic, open-road, parking, festival-bus, shuttle or ride-supply promises. When a new edition opens, replace the preliminary pin with its stated gate and confirm the return before entering.
Fit the festival into a Zigong trip
When a live edition is confirmed, give it the evening after one focused daytime product: the Dinosaur Museum for fossils and family interpretation, or the salt route for architecture and industrial history. Trying to cross the city for every attraction before a long lantern night weakens all three experiences.
