Daocheng Yading: three rewarding ways into the sacred-mountain landscape
Daocheng Yading Scenic Area (稻城亚丁景区, Dàochéng Yàdīng Jǐngqū) is a destination-scale mountain journey: managed transport carries you into a high valley framed by Xiannairi, Yangmaiyong and Xianuoduoji, then you choose how deeply to walk. Its strongest quality is not one compulsory endurance hike. The same monumental landscape can support a short sacred-mountain day, a deeper meadow-and-valley day or a conditional upper-lake challenge.
Choose the product before chasing individual pins. A first visit succeeds when the route matches your energy, weather and live access—not only when it reaches Milk Lake and Five-Color Lake.

Choose one of three Yading products
| Product | Best for | Core experience |
|---|---|---|
| Short sacred-mountain day | A first day at altitude, changing weather or travellers protecting energy | Managed arrival, the open Chonggu area and a signed short walk toward Pearl Lake / the Xiannairi view, followed by a conservative return |
| Intermediate valley day | Most first-time visitors who want more landscape without making the upper lakes compulsory | Managed arrival, Chonggu, the operating internal vehicle layer toward Luorong Pasture, then a currently open lower-valley walk before turning back |
| Conditional upper-lake day | Strong, experienced walkers with stable weather, an early start and a generous turnaround margin | The managed approach plus the officially open challenge route toward Milk Lake and Five-Color Lake; commit only after an exact-date route check |
The named stops are planning anchors, not an evergreen route promise. Current signs and staff determine which paths, vehicle links and turnaround points are usable on the day.

This is a product-choice diagram, not a live operations map or a scale route. Follow the exact-date official notice, on-site signs and staff whenever they differ.

Build the day around managed transport
The stable visitor structure begins at the Yading New Visitor Centre, followed by the scenic sightseeing bus into the managed area. The managed sequence connects toward Zhaguanbeng, with an internal electric-vehicle layer between the Chonggu side and Luorong Pasture. Current electric-vehicle price, operating hours, final returns and detailed route mechanics are not confirmed as 2026 baselines; use the live operation board for all of them.
Short product: Chonggu and the Xiannairi side
Use the sightseeing bus for the long approach, then let the open Chonggu landscape and the signed Pearl Lake / Xiannairi-side walk form a complete day. This product gives you forest, water, sacred-peak scale and time to look rather than race. It still involves walking at elevation, so keep enough margin for the return connection shown that morning.
Choose it positively when clouds gather, your first high-altitude day feels slower than expected or you simply want a contemplative visit. Turning back here preserves the landscape's strongest contrast without treating the upper lakes as a scorecard.
Intermediate product: Luorong Pasture and lower-valley depth
Continue through the internal vehicle layer that is operating toward Luorong Pasture, then spend your effort on the open meadow-and-valley section. Luorong Pasture sits at roughly 4,180 m, already high enough to make a measured pace valuable. Confirm the day's boarding point, vehicle sales and return instruction before leaving the service area.
For many visitors, this is Yading's best balance: broader mountain walls and open valley scenery, with a clear option to turn around before the highest climb. Add only the signed lower extension that remains open and still protects your managed return.
Long product: Milk Lake and Five-Color Lake, only when open
The live official product checked on 21 August 2026 says the Gonggacuo-to-Milk-Lake/Five-Color-Lake challenge line opens from 1 May, subject to construction, signs, staff and current controls. The same page also retains older closure wording for areas beyond Qijiuzhaga. Treat the exact-date official notice and the on-site board as decisive.
When the route is confirmed open, this is a serious high-altitude branch: Milk Lake is around 4,600 m and Five-Color Lake around 4,700 m. Start early, preserve time for the descent and set a personal turnaround before the final managed transport. Reaching Luorong Pasture or the lower valley remains a successful Yading day when weather, energy or route control changes.

The upper-lake landscape shown here is a conditional branch, not evidence that the route is open on your travel date.
Tickets, sightseeing bus and the live route check
These official baselines were displayed and verified on 21 August 2026. Recheck the live product for your exact date before paying:
| Item | Current displayed baseline |
|---|---|
| Peak admission | CNY 146, 1 April–30 November |
| Low-season admission | CNY 120, 1 December–31 March |
| Sightseeing bus | CNY 120 full price; treat it as a separate product from admission |
| Displayed business window | 06:30–16:30 on the live booking product; this is not proof of the last internal bus |
| Upper route | Conditional; confirm the exact open route, construction control and return instruction on the day |
Use the official Daocheng Yading booking product for the live date, route notice and inventory. For an English-language fallback, compare the exact Daocheng Yading admission product on Klook; the base admission and sightseeing bus are separate unless your selected checkout explicitly includes both.
A complete 2026 foreign-passport purchase, timed-entry and second-entry workflow is not currently published. Carry your original passport, use the same document details when booking, and confirm payment and entry handling with the official ticket service at 0836-6966022 before travel.
Turn around with the landscape still enjoyable
Weather changes quickly above the valley, and the upper branch has long exposed sections. Carry warm and waterproof layers, food and water appropriate for your chosen product, and slow the pace before fatigue forces the decision. If unusual breathlessness, headache, nausea, dizziness or weakness develops, stop gaining height, tell staff and descend rather than pursuing the next lake. Travellers with relevant heart, lung or other medical conditions should seek individual medical advice before a rapid ascent.
Stay on designated visitor routes. The current conservation rules prohibit fire, camping or overnight stays, entering undeveloped areas and unapproved drone use. Those boundaries make the short and intermediate products more useful, not lesser: they keep the day inside the landscape the operator can actually manage.
Choose your base: Shangri-La Town or Yading Village
| Base | Choose it for | Trade-off to accept |
|---|---|---|
| Shangri-La Town (香格里拉镇) | The default for most first-time international travellers: more meals, supplies, luggage flexibility and onward-road options | You begin outside the scenic area and need the full visitor-centre and managed-entry sequence |
| Yading Village (亚丁村) | An intentional scenery-led stay inside the managed area, with an evening/morning mountain setting | Fewer services, more complex luggage handling and higher sleeping elevation; current village access, vehicle and repeat-entry rules must be confirmed |
AMap modelled Shangri-La Town's neutral centre to the Yading New Visitor Centre at about 6.1 km / 14 minutes by road on 21 August 2026. That is a dated road model, not a shuttle promise. An accommodation name containing “Yading” or “Shangri-La” does not prove that it is at the entrance, so check the exact pin.

For the service-rich default, compare Shangri-La Town stays on Trip.com. Verify the property's exact map location, international-guest policy, room terms and any claimed transfer or altitude-related amenity before booking.
Getting to the real visitor centre
Navigate to the exact Yading New Visitor Centre on AMap, not the broad scenic-area pin.
AMap's 21 August 2026 road models put Daocheng Yading Airport domestic arrivals about 127.4 km / 2 hours 17 minutes from the visitor centre, and Daocheng Coach Station about 78.8 km / 1 hour 31 minutes away. The airport name therefore does not mean “at the park.” No usable AMap transit route or current operator timetable was verified for either transfer; arrange a current licensed vehicle or confirm a dated station/carrier product rather than assuming a shuttle.
Kangding to the visitor centre modelled at about 496.2 km / 10 hours 23 minutes by road, which makes it a major transfer day rather than a casual next attraction. Use the Ganzi destination guide to keep Kangding, Yading and Hailuogou as deliberate trip products.
A realistic trip shape
Give Yading at least one arrival/base night, one protected full scenic day and a departure plan with slack. Add another night when the long product matters, because weather or route controls can turn the upper-lake objective into the intermediate product without making the journey unsuccessful.
The most satisfying first visit is the one you can still enjoy on the way back: choose the product honestly, use managed transport for the long connectors and let the sacred peaks—not a highest-lake checklist—define Yading.
