Zigong Dinosaur Museum: stand above the fossil bed, then rebuild the Jurassic world
Zigong Dinosaur Museum (自贡恐龙博物馆) is worth its separate journey because it was built around a real fossil-bearing site. You can look across the in-situ bone bed, move among large skeletons excavated from the region and then use the newer reconstruction layers to understand the animals and landscape behind the remains.
Allow 2–3 hours. The clearest first visit starts with the Dinosaur Relics Hall and fossil bed, then continues to the Dinosaur Exploration Hall rather than ending after the most dramatic skeletons.

A 2–3 hour route
- Arrive at the visitor-centre side. Resolve the booking document or QR before entering the exhibition sequence.
- Begin in the Dinosaur Relics Hall. Establish where the Dashanpu fossils were found and how the museum relates to the site.
- Slow down at the in-situ fossil bed. Follow the lower viewing corridor and compare overlapping bones before moving to mounted specimens.
- Choose a local skeleton trail. Mamenchisaurus gives the gallery its long-necked scale; Shunosaurus adds a very different body plan and tail-club detail.
- Continue to the Dinosaur Exploration Hall. Use the MR/AR, geology and extinction interpretation as a second chapter, particularly with children.
- Exit with time in hand. Keep the rest of the half-day for a downtown meal or another single Zigong theme rather than another rushed outer attraction.
What makes the fossil site different
This is not a general dinosaur collection assembled far from its subject. The fossil bed keeps discovery, excavation and exhibition in the same story. Start by reading how bones overlap and how the site was exposed; the mounted skeletons then become interpretations of evidence you have already seen rather than isolated showpieces.
The interactive layer adds movement and environmental context, but it is strongest after the fossil bed. Adults can follow the evidence and local specimens slowly, while families can use the reconstructed scenes to reset attention between conventional displays.

The museum's reopening notice, checked on 21 August 2026, gives this baseline:
- Open daily: 08:30–17:30.
- Adult admission: CNY 40.
- Specified concession ticket: CNY 20; under-18s and several document-based categories are free under the current rules.
- Current visit: Dinosaur Relics Hall and Dinosaur Exploration Hall.
- Reservation and entry: reserve through the current official or supported online channel; carry the identity document used for booking or the booking QR.
The notice does not provide a dependable ordinary foreign-passport checkout walkthrough. Test the live document field before fixing the journey, carry the original passport and use a staffed channel if the selected platform cannot complete the booking.
Building 3 and the internal parking area were still under construction in the reopening notice. Recheck the current museum notice for any change; this page does not use the unconfirmed 16:45 ticket-sale or 17:00 last-entry cutoffs.
Getting there

An AMap model checked on 21 August 2026 measured the neutral downtown anchor to the visitor centre at 11.6 km / about 19 minutes by car. This is a dated road estimate, not live traffic, parking access or a bus timetable. Confirm the current drop-off or parking arrangement before departure.
Practical expectations and pairing
The halls can feel cool even in hot weather, so a light layer is useful. School holidays bring more family energy around the interactive exhibits; start with the fossil bed if quieter observation matters. Lift, stroller and accessibility details were not sufficiently documented in the current notice, so confirm them directly when they affect the visit.
