Guangdong

Guangdong works as two strong first trips. The Pearl River Delta connects Guangzhou, Foshan, Shenzhen, Zhuhai and Jiangmen. Eastern Guangdong pairs Chaozhou with Shantou for Teochew architecture, food and port history. Southwestern Guangdong adds Zhanjiang and Xuwen for bays, volcanic geology, islands and the Hainan ferry. These regions deserve different chapters.

Choose your region

• Guangzhou and Foshan: the most compact introduction to Lingnan heritage, dim sum, ceramics, ancestral halls and lion-dance culture.
• Guangzhou–Shenzhen–Zhuhai: an urban Bay Area route with contrasting skylines, museums and waterfronts.
• Chaozhou and Shantou: a focused 3–4 day Chaoshan trip organized around old-city heritage and food traditions.
• Jiangmen and Kaiping: choose this branch for diaolou architecture and overseas-Chinese history; road transport helps.
• Zhanjiang and Xuwen: allow 4–6 days for Chikan, Huguangyan, one island, Nanji Village and the Sea of Pineapples; ferry days and rural roads need margin.

How many days

Three days suit Guangzhou with a Foshan or Shunde day. Seven days allow Guangzhou, Foshan/Shunde, Shenzhen and Zhuhai without changing hotels every night. For Chaoshan, stay at least two nights and preferably split Chaozhou and Shantou. Combining the Bay Area and Chaoshan comfortably needs 10–12 days. Treat the Leizhou Peninsula as a separate 4–6 day extension rather than another day trip from Guangzhou.

Cities and bases

Guangzhou is the best transport hub and has enough neighborhoods for several days. Foshan and Shunde can be reached from Guangzhou, but an overnight makes early food markets and evening streets easier. Shenzhen is large; choose a hotel on the metro line serving your planned district. In Chaoshan, “Chaoshan Station” does not mean you have arrived in either old city—plan the final transfer.

Routes through the province

Seven-day Greater Bay Area route

1. Arrive in Guangzhou and explore the historic west-city lanes.
2. Pair a museum or ancestral-hall cluster with the Pearl River at night.
3. Visit Foshan or Shunde for heritage and food.
4. Move to Shenzhen and choose one urban-history district.
5. Add a coastal park, design district or major museum in Shenzhen.
6. Continue to Zhuhai for its waterfront and a slower evening.
7. Depart, or add Jiangmen as a dedicated architecture day.

Four-day Leizhou Peninsula route

1. Base in Zhanjiang for Chikan Old Street and Jinshawan at sunset.
2. Visit Huguangyan, then walk the Guangzhouwan-era buildings in Xiashan.
3. Move to Xuwen for the Sea of Pineapples and town heritage.
4. Use a confirmed car for Nanji Village and Denglou Cape, or replace this day with the Hainan ferry.

Naozhou Island needs another day and is better with an overnight stay. Do not place an island ferry, Nanji Village and a fixed onward train in one compressed day.

Do not turn dim sum, roast goose, beef hotpot and seafood into one continuous queue. Give each regional food culture a proper meal and leave room for ordinary neighborhood restaurants.

When to visit

Late autumn through early spring usually brings the easiest walking weather. Summer is hot, humid and storm-prone; plan indoor clusters and midday breaks. Typhoons can disrupt coastal transport and waterfront attractions. Major trade fairs and public holidays can raise Guangzhou hotel prices sharply.

Getting there and around

Guangzhou and Shenzhen are the main air and rail gateways. Metro and intercity rail cover much of the Pearl River Delta, but station names and city boundaries can be confusing. Chaozhou, Shantou and Kaiping require a planned final road transfer from the rail station.

Cross-border extensions to Hong Kong or Macau add immigration, document and luggage time. Treat them as separate destination days instead of casual metro stops.

Where to stay

In Guangzhou, choose a central metro interchange or the historic west according to your priorities. In Shenzhen, stay within the district you will use most. In Chaozhou, the old-city edge offers easier vehicle access than the pedestrian core; in Shantou, the Little Park area suits heritage walks.

What to book first

Book intercity trains, high-demand museums or performances, and hotels during fairs or holidays first. For coastal or cross-border days, recheck weather and entry requirements shortly before departure.
