Nan'ao Island, Shantou
Nan'ao Island (南澳岛) in Nan'ao County, Shantou is an inhabited island with bridge-arrival landscapes, working coastal settlements, managed heritage stops and very different east- and west-side rhythms. It is not one beach or one admission. The best first visit chooses a base, a small number of coast and history anchors, and a return plan that can absorb weather and traffic.

For most travelers, two days and one night is the balanced product: the first day handles the bridge, west or south side and the chosen base; the second adds one east or north branch before a protected return. A selective day trip still works when transport is arranged and the stop count stays low.

A full-island checklist weakens all three products. The roads, separated bases and live bridge conditions reward selection rather than speed.
Match the base to the experience
Houzhai — practical first choice
Houzhai is the county seat and the useful base for services, food and a lived-in town atmosphere. Use the Nan'ao Island tourism centre on AMap as a clear orientation target. It works well when the day mixes the bridge side with one later coast or heritage branch.
Qing'ao — east-coast priority
Qing'ao Bay suits travelers who want an earlier east-coast start and a possible sunrise window. It is farther from the west-side arrival and can feel more visitor-oriented. A bay pin does not confirm swimming, beach access, sunrise or the exact location of a hotel.
Shen'ao or another village — specialist choice
Shen'ao and the northern settlements add inhabited-coast and working-water texture. They suit a slower, transport-secure plan rather than a generic first-night recommendation. Verify the exact property, road access and return before committing.

Compare Nan'ao County hotels on Trip.com only after choosing the base. Map-check the exact property and confirm international-guest policy, cancellation, parking and any pickup; a county-wide result does not prove walkability to a bay or bus stop.
Build a selective loop
1. Bridge arrival and Changshanwei
Use the area around Changshanwei Lighthouse as the arrival-landscape choice. Stop only at a legal off-bridge location. Stopping, passenger pickup, drop-off and photography on Nan'ao Bridge itself are prohibited.
2. Choose one inhabited base
Continue to Houzhai for services and food, or commit to Qing'ao when the east coast is the day's priority. AMap's 21 August 2026 road models put Changshanwei about 10.1 km / 22 minutes from the Houzhai tourism centre and Houzhai about 18.7 km / 40 minutes from Qing'ao Bay. Those snapshots show why the bases are different choices; live traffic can be slower.
3. Add one managed history stop
Song Well Scenic Area, General's Mansion and Treasure Island are separate managed products. Choose the one that fits the open route and interests you most; do not assume one island ticket, shared hours or automatic admission.

The island's aquaculture landscape gives the coast a working character, but a roadside or distant view is not an invitation to enter farms, docks or boats. Keep marine activities separate from the road itinerary and use authorized operators under current conditions.
4. Finish with one coast, not every coast
Qing'ao is the east-coast choice. A south-side route can instead pair Song Well with an inhabited stop. Keep sunrise, swimming, exposed rocks and sunset conditional on weather, access and the safety boundary in force that day.

Choose transport deliberately
For a private day product, check the Nan'ao Island vehicle loop on Trip.com. The base option lists a vehicle and driver from a stated Longhu pickup area. It does not automatically include a professional English-speaking guide, meals, child seat or admission to managed island attractions; packages with a guide are separate.
Public transport can connect major island bases, but map results and visitor reports do not prove a fixed timetable, easy full loop or last return. Use live route planning and reduce the stops. A full-island e-scooter circuit is not a sound default because shared roads, slopes, range, sun and wind can turn it into a tiring transport problem.
Pedestrians, bicycles and motorcycles are prohibited on Nan'ao Bridge. No rental plan should imply that you can cross the bridge on them.
Clear the bridge and weather gates
The current bridge operating notice is the baseline. Vehicle access can be restricted or closed for typhoon, strong wind, fog, disaster, major accident or traffic control. The notice gives a 60 km/h speed limit and presents a CNY 48 single-trip rate for passenger vehicles of nine seats or fewer, with the two-direction bridge charge collected on entry. Verify the current charge presentation rather than calculating a new total.
For self-drive, the 2026 municipal appointment notice directs visitors to the 南澳畅行 mini-program. Applications can be made up to seven days before entry, including the travel date, and a successful appointment assigns a four-to-six-hour entry window. This is a vehicle-entry process, not an attraction ticket. Support for foreign phone numbers, rental vehicles and non-mainland plates remains unconfirmed, so test the form before building the trip around self-drive.
Check the live bridge feed, county traffic notice and weather warning before leaving the mainland. Protect the return before a train or flight and move the island day when severe conditions close the bridge or scenic sites.
