Canton Tower

Canton Tower (广州塔, Guǎngzhōu Tǎ) is Guangzhou's 600 m television and observation tower beside the Pearl River. The question is not whether to “do every floor,” but which view you actually want: the illuminated tower from outside, an indoor skyline deck, an outdoor platform, or a high-altitude ride.

Choose the Experience Before Buying

Exterior Only

For architecture and night photography, remain at ground level or view the tower from the opposite riverbank. This costs nothing and often produces a more recognisable photograph than shooting through observation-deck glass.

Indoor Observation

The White Cloud and Starry Sky halls around 428–433 m provide an enclosed city view and are the most sensible choice in heat, light rain or for visitors who do not want a thrill ride. Visibility matters more than the nominal height.

Outdoor Observation

The tower also advertises outdoor platforms at 450 m and 488 m. Access depends on the selected package, weather, wind and maintenance. An outdoor-deck ticket should never be bought on the assumption that the deck will remain open in poor conditions.

Bubble Tram or Sky Drop

The Bubble Tram circles near the top in transparent cabins; Sky Drop is a separate vertical thrill ride. Both can have age, height, health, weather and maintenance restrictions. They are add-ons, not required parts of an observation visit.

Hours and Ticket Rules

The official Canton Tower website lists general operation as 09:30–22:30. Individual decks, rides, restaurants and the final admission can close earlier or follow maintenance windows. The live product page and entrance board control.

Old fixed price tables are unreliable because packages and included levels change. At checkout, verify:

• the highest level included;
• indoor versus outdoor access;
• whether Bubble Tram or Sky Drop is included;
• the booked entry window and last redemption time;
• passport acceptance and the document required onsite;
• weather-closure, maintenance and refund terms.

Check the exact Canton Tower attraction listing on Trip.com, then compare its dated product with the official checkout. A tower admission does not automatically include a Pearl River cruise, restaurant, cinema or every high-altitude ride.

When to Visit

A slot 60–90 minutes before sunset can include daylight, dusk and city lights, but it is also the most weather-dependent and popular period. Guangzhou's haze, cloud and rain can erase the long view even when the tower is open. Check visibility, not just rainfall.

Allow 1.5–2.5 hours for one observation product, including security, lifts and queues. Add more only for a booked restaurant or ride. Weekday mornings are calmer and often clearer; night gives the strongest urban light pattern but little distant landscape detail.

Getting There

Take Metro Line 3 or the APM Line to Canton Tower Station and follow signs to the tower entrance. Metro is preferable to driving because road access and taxi pickup become congested around evening sessions and riverfront events.

Do not confuse Canton Tower Station with Zhujiang New Town across the river. If you want the full exterior skyline first, view the tower from the north bank and then cross by metro or a public pedestrian route rather than relying on a direct river crossing at every point.

Inside the Tower

Security and lift batching can create waits even with a timed ticket. Bring the original identity document used for purchase, keep large luggage elsewhere and arrive early enough to find the correct ticket entrance.

Glass reflections are strongest after dark. Hold the lens close to the glass without touching or blocking others, turn off flash and obey tripod restrictions. At outdoor levels, secure hats, phones and loose items. A window position or unobstructed photo is never guaranteed.

Restaurants operate as separate reservations and may have dress, minimum-spend or dining-time rules. Never assume a restaurant booking includes general observation access unless the exact product says so.

A Better Guangzhou Pairing

Combine the tower with the Pearl River promenade or one nearby cultural venue, not a cross-city heritage checklist. Yongqing Fang and Chen Clan Ancestral Hall belong to a separate western-Guangzhou day.

Choose one tower product deliberately and keep the exterior view as a fallback. The skyline is still worth seeing when wind closes a ride or haze removes the 488 m advantage.
