Yangtai Mountain Forest Park

Overview

Yangtai Mountain Forest Park, spanning across Bao'an, Longhua, and Nanshan districts in northwestern Shenzhen, covers an impressive area of 28.57 square kilometers. Known as the "Urban Oxygen Bar," it features two prominent peaks: the main peak at 587.1 meters (the highest in western Shenzhen) and a secondary peak at 460.7 meters, connected by a scenic ridge trail.

The park serves as both a vital green lung for the city and a crucial ecological barrier. Its lush landscape is characterized by rolling hills and dense forest coverage, creating a verdant panorama that stretches as far as the eye can see.

Historical Significance

The Hero Mountain Legacy

Yangtai Mountain earned its reputation as "Hero Mountain" during the Anti-Japanese War period. It served as a crucial base for the East River Column, playing a pivotal role in a remarkable rescue operation in 1941. Following Hong Kong's fall to Japanese forces, the Communist Party orchestrated a daring mission from Yangtai Mountain to rescue hundreds of cultural figures and patriots, including renowned individuals like Mao Dun, He Xiangning, and Zou Taofen.

Today, a 20-meter-tall "Victory Rescue" sculpture stands at Dalang Square within the park, commemorating this extraordinary historical event and the indomitable spirit of those who fought for justice and freedom.

The Legend of the Seven Maidens

A touching local legend tells of seven kind-hearted young women who climbed Yangtai Mountain during a severe drought. They prayed earnestly for rain for three days and nights, eventually succeeding in bringing life-giving rain to the parched land. This tale gave rise to the name "Young Seven Ladies Peak" (Nen Qiniang Dong), and remnants of their incense burners can still be found on the mountain today.

Natural Wonders

Rich Water Resources

The park features five medium and small-sized reservoirs, including Laiwushan, Gaofeng, and Lengshuikeng reservoirs. These water bodies, along with over 20 mountain springs and streams, form the headwaters of several important rivers in Shenzhen, including the Shiyan, Baimang, and Mashan Rivers.

Diverse Flora and Fauna

The park boasts an impressive biodiversity with:

  • 452 plant species from 114 families
  • Notable protected species including the ancient fern Alsophila spinulosa (a "living fossil" from the dinosaur era)
  • 82 vertebrate species
  • Wildlife such as pangolins, small civets, wild boars, owls, and Chinese white-headed bulbuls
