Henan
Henan rewards travelers who follow chronology rather than a list of reconstructed night streets. Zhengzhou, Luoyang and Kaifeng form the easiest first route: provincial archaeology and a transport hub, early imperial capitals and Buddhist art, then the Northern Song city and its living urban culture. Add Anyang when Shang archaeology is a priority.
Choose your region
- Central history triangle: Zhengzhou–Luoyang–Kaifeng in 6–8 days.
- Songshan extension: Dengfeng for Shaolin Temple, pagoda forest and mountain landscapes; use a full day or overnight.
- Northern archaeology: Anyang for Yinxu and the National Museum of Chinese Writing; add two nights.
- Nature branch: Yuntai Mountain, Laojun Mountain or another range should replace a city day and remain weather-flexible.
How many days
Four days can cover Luoyang and Kaifeng. Seven days allow two nights in Zhengzhou, three in Luoyang and two in Kaifeng. Add Anyang or a mountain only with two or three more days. Major museums can take half a day or longer; do not place two archaeological museums and a grotto complex on the same day.
Cities and bases
Zhengzhou is the main rail hub and the base for Henan Museum and a Dengfeng road day. Luoyang needs separate days for Longmen Grottoes, major museums and the old-capital landscape. Kaifeng is compact enough for a two-night stay, with daytime historical sites and one evening district. Reconstructed performance zones should support, not replace, the original monuments and collections.

Seven-day first route
- Arrive in Zhengzhou and keep the first evening light.
- Give Henan Museum a long visit; add one city-history site.
- Choose Dengfeng as a full road day, then travel to Luoyang.
- Visit Longmen Grottoes with enough time for both interpretation and the river view.
- Choose Luoyang Museum, the Ancient Tomb Museum or an early-capital site.
- Travel to Kaifeng and follow one historical axis through the old city.
- Add a museum, Iron Pagoda or a slower food-and-neighborhood day.
The most popular temples, caves and evening shows have different booking rules. Decide the historical questions you care about before buying every available performance.
When to visit
Spring and autumn are comfortable and very popular, especially during Luoyang's peony season and public holidays. Summer is hot and exposed at archaeological sites; winter is cold but quieter. Mountain visibility, cableways and trails depend on weather. Seasonal flowers and festival programs should be checked for the exact year.
Getting there and around
Zhengzhou has the strongest air and rail connections. Fast trains make Luoyang and Kaifeng easy, while Dengfeng and mountain areas require buses, drivers or organized transfers. Read station names carefully: old urban stations and distant high-speed stations create different final journeys.
Where to stay
In Zhengzhou, stay near a metro line or rail hub. In Luoyang, choose between central transport and the newer southern districts according to your museum and Longmen plan. In Kaifeng, the old-city edge offers evening access without forcing a vehicle into pedestrian streets.
What to book first
Reserve high-demand museums, Longmen entry, fixed performances, holiday trains and mountain transport first. Then book hotels around the chosen order. Recheck museum closure days before assigning dates.
