Zhengzhou is more useful than its transport-hub reputation suggests. Its strongest first visit joins museum objects to the buried and surviving Shang capital, then treats Songshan and Shaolin as a separate full-day decision.

Transport and base
Zhengzhou, Zhengzhou East and the airport serve different trips. Dengfeng and Shaolin lack a direct high-speed rail stop at the temple; compare licensed day tour, bus and private transfer by exact pickup and return.
Choose accommodation by the first departure and onward connection, not by a broad area name.
Weather and margin
Museums offer a weather-proof core. Songshan paths react to heat, rain, ice and temporary fire-control or maintenance restrictions; a city alternative protects the itinerary.
Where to go next
