Gansu
Gansu is a long east–west province, not a compact circuit. Lanzhou is the eastern gateway, while Dunhuang anchors Mogao Caves, Mingsha Mountain and the desert archaeological lines. A full Hexi Corridor route adds Zhangye and Jiayuguan between them in one direction and needs at least a week.
Choose your trip
- Dunhuang focus: 3–4 days for Mogao, Mingsha and one desert extension.
- Classic corridor: Lanzhou–Zhangye–Jiayuguan–Dunhuang in 8–10 days.
- Lanzhou and Gannan: a separate southern grassland and Tibetan-cultural route; do not combine it casually with Dunhuang.
- Silk Road continuation: enter from Xi'an or Lanzhou and leave from Dunhuang or Xinjiang to avoid backtracking.
How many days
Three days is the minimum for Dunhuang if tickets and arrival times align. Five days give the cave visit, desert evening, western line and a buffer for heat or wind. Eight days can cover the main corridor cities, but every stop should have a purpose; the distances are too large for daily detours.
Bases and route
Dunhuang city is the hotel and food base. Mogao Caves use a controlled visitor system outside town, while Mingsha Mountain lies on another edge. The western desert line toward Yumen Pass and related sites is a long road day; the eastern archaeological line is a different product. In the wider corridor, use Zhangye for its historic center and Danxia day, and Jiayuguan for fort and wall landscapes.
Nine-day corridor route
- Arrive in Lanzhou and explore the Yellow River city.
- Add a museum or nearby heritage site, then take the westbound train.
- Use Zhangye for its old-city monuments.
- Reserve a separate day for the Danxia landscape and continue to Jiayuguan.
- Explore Jiayuguan's fort-and-wall cluster.
- Travel to Dunhuang and keep the desert evening optional.
- Visit Mogao Caves on the exact reserved product.
- Choose the western desert line or eastern archaeological line.
- Use the final morning for recovery, museum or departure.
When to visit
Late spring and autumn are the easiest corridor seasons. Summer brings intense heat, sun and holiday demand; outdoor desert visits work better early or late. Winter is cold and quiet, with reduced services. Wind, dust and rare heavy rain can change desert access. Gannan follows a different highland season.
Getting there and around
Lanzhou is the eastern air and rail hub; Dunhuang provides a useful western airport and railway exit. Trains link the corridor cities, while scenic sites need buses, drivers or tours. Do not estimate road time from straight-line distance. Confirm whether a tour includes entry, shuttle, sunset return and hotel pickup.
Where to stay
Use central hotels near food and transport in Lanzhou, Zhangye and Jiayuguan. In Dunhuang, the city center is more practical than an isolated desert-themed stay for multiple touring days. If a sunrise or late desert session matters, verify the return before booking the room.
What to book first
Reserve Mogao Caves, long-distance rail or flights, summer hotels and desert road days first. Then plan museum closures and heat-safe times. Recheck weather and site operation before any remote line.
