Tianshui

Tianshui rewards two different days. Maijishan Grottoes is a cliff-hugging Buddhist-art visit east of the city, with exposed walkways and a ticket choice that determines whether you enter caves. Qinzhou old city is for the Fuxi Temple, Tianshui Museum, lanes and food. Keep those jobs distinct: a station, the cliff site and the old town are not one short city circuit.

Two days that actually fit

Day 1 — Maijishan: leave early, use the visitor transport and spend your main energy on the grotto route. Return with enough margin for weather or a slower exit. Eat and sleep in the city if you want a Qinzhou evening; do not count a late arrival at the cave gate as a full visit.

Day 2 — Qinzhou: start with Fuxi Temple, continue to Tianshui Museum for context, then use the old streets and Hu House area for an unhurried walk. Yuquan Temple is a possible final uphill addition, not obligatory after a tiring first day. The city tourism bureau's 2026 route places these anchors in the same urban cultural day.

Recent two-day visitor accounts make the same split: Maijishan consumes its own major block, while Fuxi Temple and the museum work as a city walk. This is more useful than packing every site into a single taxi circuit.

Run the two days without backtracking

Day 1 — Maijishan excursion. After breakfast, go directly to the Maijishan visitor approach. From Tianshui South Station the mapped road to the grottoes is about 29 km / 45 minutes by car before queueing and local access; a public-transit route with changes can take much longer. If you arrive by train that morning, do not buy a tight cave slot until the station transfer is settled. At the site, collect or validate the product you bought, follow the visitor route toward the cliff, and allow the main block for the grotto walkway rather than only the distant view. The walk is a sequence of exposed stairs and narrow passages; let slower visitors set the pace and obey any one-way or no-photo signs. If open, the ground-level exhibition and nearby temple context help explain what you saw after the cliff route. Eat before or after the controlled walkway, not while holding up a narrow stair.

Start the return in mid-afternoon if you want a relaxed Qinzhou dinner. A city base makes it easy to eat guagua, a buckwheat-based cold dish that can be spicy, alongside noodles or a milder soup. Ask about chili and cold ingredients rather than assuming every stall prepares it the same way. If rain, ice or inspections close the cliff route, move the Qinzhou day forward and use the second date for Maijishan if your ticket can be changed.

Day 2 — an on-foot Qinzhou culture circuit. Have breakfast in the old city, then visit Fuxi Temple first, when its courtyards are easier to read before a full day of movement. Tianshui Museum is by the Fuxi Temple address, so see its local-history displays in the same block instead of booking another cross-town car. Break for lunch near the old streets. Continue on foot to Yuquan Temple only if you want an uphill temple and city view; the map places it about 1.4 km / 20 minutes' walk from Fuxi, before time inside the site. Descend toward the old-town lanes and the Hu family residence area—short walking links of roughly 0.5–0.7 km connect these urban stops. End with an unhurried meal and station transfer.

If your train leaves early, cut Yuquan and keep the Fuxi–museum–old-lanes core. If the museum is closed or its exhibition is not of interest, spend that block on the temple's architecture and Qinzhou streets. Check the separate opening calendars before assuming both sites can be visited on a Monday or holiday.

Optional third day and who should pace it differently

Xianrenya or Jingtu Temple can add another Maiji-area day for travelers with a driver, current access information and energy for more terrain. They should not be squeezed between a timed grotto visit and a Qinzhou evening merely because they appear near Maijishan on a map. With children or anyone uneasy on exposed stairs, agree beforehand whether a lower-level scenic visit would still be worthwhile if the grotto walkway feels too much. A B scenic-only ticket is a different product, not an automatic substitute after purchasing A.

Maijishan ticket choice

Maijishan Grottoes has historically sold an A ticket with grotto access and a B ticket for the scenic area without that cave access. Read the current product carefully: seeing the hill from outside is a different experience from following the cliff walkways. Entry is capacity-controlled, and weather can shut exposed areas. The operator announced a reopening on August 20, 2026 after a three-day weather closure—good evidence that a forecast and current notice matter. Seasonal opening spans different hours, so verify the dated slot before committing to a train.

The walkway can feel high even when the physical distance is modest. If someone in your group dislikes heights or cannot manage stairs, discuss the route before buying the cave-access product. No photograph inside a protected grotto is worth ignoring the site's restrictions.

Qinzhou on foot

Fuxi Temple is a sequence of courtyards and halls associated with the culture hero Fuxi. Give it time for its architecture and ritual context rather than treating it as a five-minute gate photograph. Tianshui Museum nearby adds local history; current exhibitions and any reservation rules are separate live checks. Stop for local noodles or guagua (a savory buckwheat dish) in the old city, and confirm spice before ordering.

Transport, base and onward travel

Check whether your train uses Tianshui South or another station, and map the station to your actual hotel. A Qinzhou base makes the urban day easy; a Maiji-side base makes only the grotto excursion shorter. For most two-day visitors, one city hotel avoids unnecessary luggage moves. Bring water and grip-friendly shoes for the grotto day, and a modest layer for changing weather. If exposed routes close, use the city culture day first and keep the mountain visit flexible.
