Overhanging Great Wall
The Overhanging Great Wall (悬壁长城) is the athletic member of Jiayuguan's three-site system: a compact restored wall climbs the dark Heishan ridge so sharply that it appears suspended above the Gobi. Visit for the relationship between wall and terrain, not for a long wild-wall expedition.
Important current closure
Do not travel here on the basis of normal hours alone. The latest official notice found on September 11, 2026 says the scenic area closed temporarily from September 7 because prolonged heavy rain created risks around the mountainside and flood channels. It says reopening will be announced after weather and safety inspections. No later official reopening notice was found during this check.
Call the scenic area at 0937-6396110 or 0937-6396100 or verify its official WeChat notice before arranging transport. A Trip.com product page or a ticket still visible online does not override the closure.
If the site has officially reopened
Inspect the lower interpretation area first, then decide how high to climb. The formal route is steep, exposed and short enough to tempt visitors into moving too fast. Wear shoes with grip, keep both hands free, and turn around before knees or wind become a problem.
Allow 60–90 minutes for the managed climb, longer if you rest often. The visible wall is substantially restored; that does not make it meaningless. Its value is the clear demonstration of how an outer defense line used a ridge north of the main fort. Unrestored fragments beyond the visitor boundary are protected remains, not alternative hiking routes.
Tickets, hours and transport
The April 27 official notice set standalone admission at CNY 21 and said a same-day voucher is included with a full or discounted Jiayuguan Pass ticket. It listed May–October hours of 08:00–20:00, with ticket sales ending at 19:30. These are baseline terms only; the temporary closure controls until an official reopening.
The site is outside central Jiayuguan. The three-attraction direct bus commonly reaches it after First Beacon Tower, but the timetable is fixed and can change. Confirm the last return at the Pass visitor center. Independent visitors should arrange a waiting driver or return pickup before entry; do not assume a car will accept the remote trip immediately.
Who should skip the climb
This is a poor choice for travelers with unstable knees, strong vertigo or little tolerance for direct sun. There is no lift to the ridge and very little shade on the ascent. Families should judge the exposed stairs rather than the child's enthusiasm at the entrance. A lower-level look at the wall's line is still worthwhile when the summit is not.
Bring water before arrival and use the entrance facilities; do not expect reliable refreshments on the ridge. In gusty conditions, avoid loose hats and keep phones secured. If your day also includes the Pass, put the wall first only when the site is confirmed open and climbing energy is the limiting factor. Otherwise the official transfer order is usually easier to execute.
If closure persists, use the extra time at Jiayuguan Pass or another open museum. Do not substitute an unofficial roadside climb.
