Maijishan Grottoes

Maijishan (麦积山石窟) holds Buddhist sculpture and painting in caves cut into a distinctive cliff. The visitor route climbs exposed walkways on the rock face. Its main booking trap is simple: a scenic-area ticket can admit you to the setting without admitting you to the grottoes.

Choose A or B before choosing a time

The operator distinguishes an A ticket, which includes the grotto visit, from a B ticket, which covers the scenic area without the same grotto access. Product names and cave availability can change, so read the current checkout inclusions and any timed entry. The Dunhuang Academy's published seasonal baseline is 08:30–17:30 April–October and 09:00–17:00 November–March; exceptional notices or summer extensions may supersede it. Book the date and slot that leave time for the approach shuttle, queue and cliff route.

The 2026 operator sold advance inventory within a 1–15 day window. Do not assume that policy continues unchanged; verify the booking calendar. If using a foreign passport, check which product and identity-entry method actually support it.

Experience the cliff, not a rushed photo stop

Allow at least half a day from the visitor center, with more margin if you travel from central Tianshui. Take the required site transfer, use facilities before the upper climb and follow the one-way route and staff directions. Look closely at the relationship between the cave façades, sculpture and mountain, but observe photography restrictions inside caves. Some galleries close for conservation or repair; a ticket does not promise a particular niche.

The height can feel more intense than a map suggests. Steps, narrow walkways and exposed railings make this a poor choice for someone with severe vertigo or limited stair ability. If that applies, ask staff what lower-area viewing is available before buying an A ticket. Bring water, non-slip shoes and a layer for changing mountain weather.

A grotto day from the visitor center to the city

Before the climb: arrive with the A/B distinction and timed slot already understood. From Tianshui South Station, the mapped drive to Maijishan is about 29 km / 45 minutes before access queues. At the visitor approach, validate the ticket, find the official internal vehicle if required, use the facilities and carry just water, a light layer and essentials onto the cliff route. A bulky bag makes narrow stairs harder. Photograph the cliff from below first: it reveals how galleries and caves are set into the rock face.

On the cliff: follow the route directed by staff rather than choosing a niche from an old online map. Pause at open viewing points to understand the contrast between the rock-cut exterior, timber-like façades and Buddhist figures, but keep traffic moving in constricted sections. Cave access changes with conservation and safety work. Do not use flash or photograph where barred; the sculptures and paintings are more valuable than an image file. If heights feel difficult, speak to staff before ascending further rather than forcing yourself through an exposed passage.

After the cliff: if the ground-level exhibition or nearby temple area is open, use it to put the artwork in context and let your legs recover. Eat before the long city transfer or carry a simple snack; then return to Qinzhou with daylight margin. A full grotto visit plus the journey is a major day's activity. The city-side Fuxi Temple and museum make a better next day than a late, tired detour from the cliff.

If the upper walkways close, ask what the B scenic-only visit actually offers and whether your A ticket is refundable or movable. Do not treat a lower-area view as equivalent without agreeing to that different experience. Rain and freezing conditions also affect the steps outside the controlled cave area; wait for the site's current announcement instead of following visitors past a barrier.

Closures and return

Heavy rain, storms or instability can close the walkways. The operator's August 20, 2026 reopening followed a weather-related closure beginning August 17. Check the operator's current announcements on your visit day and keep Fuxi Temple as a city alternative. Do not anchor a narrow same-day train connection to a mountain exit time.
