Jiayuguan
Jiayuguan makes sense when its three principal Great Wall sites are read together: the fortified pass controls the corridor, the Overhanging Great Wall guards the northern ridge and the First Beacon Tower meets the southern river cliff.

How many days
- One full day: the fort plus one outer site with a confirmed car.
- Two days: all three sites at a measured pace, a museum or city evening, and weather margin.
- Cut first: an outer site before racing between distant gates near closing time.
Choose your route
- Start at Jiayuguan Pass for the plan of the defensive system.
- Choose the Overhanging Great Wall for climbing and ridge views.
- Choose the First Beacon Tower for the Taolai River cliff and frontier geography; combine both only with a dedicated vehicle.
The anchors that earn the trip
Transport and base
The three official sites are spread north and south of the city. A taxi out is not automatically a return service. Fix the sequence, waiting time, parking gates and final drop-off before leaving the urban area.
Stay near the service center or station for a mobile route. Choose an outer base only when its early access clearly outweighs another hotel change.
Weather and margin
The Gobi brings strong sun, wind and large temperature swings. Snow-mountain visibility is a bonus, never a promise. Outdoor stairs can close during wind, ice or maintenance.
Where to go next
Zhangye lies east and Dunhuang west on the Hexi route. Keep Jiayuguan as a linear stop rather than returning to Lanzhou.
