Zhangye
Zhangye is the Hexi Corridor stop where geology, Western Xia history and cliff-cut Buddhist heritage belong to three different day blocks. Base in the city, protect the best light for Danxia, and treat Mati Temple as a mountain-road excursion rather than a spare afternoon.

How many days
- Two days: Giant Buddha Temple after arrival, then a protected Colorful Danxia half or full day.
- Three days: add Mati Temple with a confirmed vehicle and mountain-weather margin.
- Cut first: Mati Temple before compressing Danxia, the old city and a westbound train into one day.

The anchors that earn the trip
Transport and base
Zhangye West is the main high-speed rail gateway. The three sights are in different directions; taxis, licensed tours or a private car solve different trips, and a driver waiting at one site does not prove a same-day multi-site route.
Stay near the service center or station for a mobile route. Choose an outer base only when its early access clearly outweighs another hotel change.
Weather and margin
Danxia color depends on sun angle, cloud and recent rain. Mati Temple is cooler and higher than the city. Carry water, sun protection and a warm layer, and obey closures after storms.
Where to go next
Continue west to Jiayuguan and Dunhuang, or east to Lanzhou. Book the rail segment before tying a sunset visit to a late departure.
