Mati Temple Grottoes

Mati Temple Grottoes (马蹄寺石窟群, Mǎtí Sì Shíkū Qún) combine Buddhist cave sites, cliff architecture, living religious spaces and Qilian foothill scenery in Sunan Yugur Autonomous County. The municipal tourism authority places the complex about 65 km from central Zhangye. Treat it as a full-day mountain excursion, not a quick add-on to Colorful Danxia.

Decide Whether the Cliff Climb Suits You

The most distinctive experience is the Thirty-Three Heavens Grottoes (三十三天石窟), where narrow passages and steep stone steps connect caves within the cliff. Parts can feel enclosed, require careful hand placement and operate with controlled one-way movement. This is substantially harder than viewing the façade from below.

Choose the climb only if you are comfortable with height, confined passages, irregular steps and slow queues. It is unsuitable as an assumed route for limited mobility, serious knee or balance concerns, or a traveller who panics in tight spaces. Seeing the cliff architecture, temples and mountain setting from ground level remains a complete alternative.

Arrive Early and Prioritise One Main Complex

Recent July–September 2026 visitors repeatedly report long queues at Thirty-Three Heavens after tour groups arrive. If its current timed admission is available, reserve the correct slot and make it your first major stop while you have energy.

A practical order is:

Visitor centre: verify the day's open grottoes, shuttle stops, reservation window and final return.
Thirty-Three Heavens / North Temple sector: complete the controlled cliff route first if conditions and ability allow.
Ground-level temple spaces: slow down after the climb and distinguish active worship from visitor circulation.
One additional grotto sector: choose Thousand Buddha Caves or another open section rather than racing through every named stop.
One landscape viewpoint: finish with the Qilian foothill setting only when weather and return time are secure.

Allow four to six hours inside the wider scenic area, plus roughly 1–1.5 hours each way by road from Zhangye under ordinary conditions. Queues, livestock, road works and mountain weather can extend the day.

Tickets, Shuttle and Reservations

The scenic area sells different combinations of general access, individual grotto sectors and transport. Recent 2026 visitors commonly report a bundled product around CNY 87 including the scenic shuttle, but this is not a captured first-party tariff and must not be treated as a permanent price.

Before paying, confirm:

whether Thirty-Three Heavens needs a separate timed reservation;
which grotto groups the selected ticket includes;
whether the scenic shuttle is included and where each stop returns;
the last admission to the cliff route;
refund or change rules if weather closes a sector;
whether the passport used online is supported at the gate.

Use the Zhangye municipal scenic-area directory to identify the official operator channel, then let the live checkout and onsite board control. Avoid paying a private guide who claims to bypass a timed capacity limit.

Arrange the Round Trip Before Leaving Zhangye

Public access is not frequent enough to improvise a late return. Use a licensed round-trip charter, a clearly scheduled visitor service or a tour that names Mati Temple and its pickup point. Put the departure time, vehicle, included admission, waiting time and hotel return in writing.

A city driver may wait outside controlled scenic sectors, while the official shuttle handles movement inside. “Private car” does not automatically mean door-to-door access at every grotto. Confirm whether the driver enters the scenic area and where you reunite.

Mountain Conditions and Visitor Conduct

Carry water, a simple meal or snacks, sun protection and a warm layer. Weather can change quickly near the Qilian Mountains, and mobile signal or food choice may be limited. Keep both hands available for steep passages; a small backpack is better than loose bags.

Do not touch murals or sculpture, photograph where prohibited, enter an unassigned cave or overtake in a narrow corridor. Active religious areas deserve quiet behaviour and modest dress. Optional horse rides and village detours are separate products with their own safety, welfare and return questions—not part of the grotto ticket.

Fit It into a Zhangye Trip

Give Mati Temple its own day. Use Zhangye Giant Buddha Temple for a compact city visit and Zhangye Colorful Danxia for a separate afternoon or sunset. A driver can connect remote places, but cannot recover time lost to a two-hour cliff queue.

Mati Temple rewards travellers who accept its physical limits and remoteness. Protect the main cliff visit, choose one supporting sector and let the mountain setting remain part of the day.
