Visa, payment, transport and attraction rules can change. Recheck the linked detailed page before committing non-refundable money.
Do I need a visa to visit China?
It depends on your passport, trip purpose, length and entry route. Check the current official nationality rule before buying non-refundable transport, because unilateral exemptions and transit policies have different conditions. Choose the correct China visa route.
What is China's 240-hour visa-free transit policy?
Eligible passport holders can apply at designated ports when traveling through China to a third country or region on confirmed onward transport. It is not a general ten-day visa: nationality, port, permitted area and ticket sequence all matter. See legal 240-hour route examples.
Do Hong Kong and Macau count as third regions for transit?
They can satisfy the third-region direction test when the complete ticket sequence and designated mainland ports meet the current policy. You still pass separate immigration controls and need entry permission for every part of the route. Plan Hong Kong and Macau crossings.
Do I need to complete a China arrival card?
Most foreign arrivals complete the current entry declaration or arrival-card process requested by the port. Use only the official channel linked by your carrier or immigration authority and keep your first accommodation and contact details available. Prepare for arrival and customs.
When is the best time to visit China?
Spring and autumn are the broadest all-round choices, but China is too large for one national answer. Match the month to the region, then check typhoon, monsoon, altitude, winter-road and holiday risks. Compare China month by month.
Which Chinese holidays should I avoid?
Spring Festival and the National Day Golden Week create the widest transport and attraction pressure. Smaller public-holiday weekends can also sell out popular trains, so check the official annual calendar before fixing a route. See holiday crowd and booking guidance.
How many days do I need for a first China trip?
Seven days supports three major cities at a fast pace; ten days is more balanced; fourteen days allows a nature branch without hiding transfer time. Count hotel-to-hotel travel, not only scheduled train or flight duration. Choose a first-trip length.
Which cities are best for a first trip to China?
Beijing, Xi'an and Shanghai form the clearest history-to-modernity route. Add Chengdu for food and pandas, or Guilin and Yangshuo for landscape, only when the extra transfer still leaves complete city days. Open the structured 10-day route.
How much should I budget per day in China?
A careful independent traveler, a mid-range couple and a high-comfort traveler have very different hotel and transport totals. Build from city-specific accommodation, intercity tickets and paid icons, then add a disruption buffer. Use the China budget guide.
Do I need cash in China?
Mobile payment dominates, but carry a modest cash backup and at least one physical bank card. Cash is especially useful when a foreign-card binding fails, a phone dies or a rural merchant cannot process your wallet. Build a payment backup plan.
Can foreigners use Alipay in China?
Many visitors can register Alipay with an overseas phone number and bind an eligible foreign card. Complete identity and card setup before arrival, then test a small payment while you still have another method available. Set up Alipay step by step.
Can foreigners use WeChat Pay?
WeChat Pay supports many international cards, but identity review, issuer approval and merchant type can affect a transaction. Treat it as one layer, not your only access to money. Set up WeChat Pay.
Will my foreign credit card work in China?
Major hotels, airlines and larger merchants may accept international cards, while small businesses often prefer QR payment. Tell your issuer about travel and carry a second network plus cash rather than relying on one card. Compare cards, cash and QR payment.
How do I get internet access in China?
Choose among international roaming, a travel eSIM and a local SIM by coverage, number needs and blocked-service behavior. Install and activate essential tools before landing, and save offline copies of bookings and addresses. Compare China internet options.
Do I need a VPN in China?
Some overseas services are unavailable on ordinary mainland connections, while roaming or travel-eSIM routing may behave differently. Decide before travel, follow applicable law and never make one blocked app the sole holder of tickets or contacts. See the current connectivity checklist.
What is the best map app for China?
Amap is usually the strongest choice for current mainland POIs and public transport; Apple Maps can be simpler for many international visitors. Google Maps data can be incomplete or misaligned in mainland China, so save Chinese names and pins. Compare navigation apps.
How do foreigners book China train tickets?
Use the official 12306 system or a reputable booking platform with the passenger name and passport details exactly matching the travel document. Inventory opens on a rolling schedule, so a search result is not a held seat. Follow the 12306 booking tutorial.
Do I need my passport for Chinese trains?
Yes. China's rail tickets are real-name tickets, and the original passport used for booking is the travel credential at entry, boarding and exit checks. See passport and identity rules.
How early should I arrive at a Chinese railway station?
For a first trip, 45–60 minutes is a useful personal target, with more time at huge stations, during holidays or when passport verification is unresolved. The station's live gate and security process controls, not a universal check-in promise. Plan high-speed rail door to door.
Which China train seat class should I choose?
Second class suits most daytime high-speed trips; first class buys more space, and business class is a premium product rather than a necessity. On overnight trains, compare hard, soft and EMU sleepers by privacy, berth position and schedule. Compare every seat and sleeper class.
Should I take a train or domestic flight in China?
High-speed rail often wins for central-city trips of roughly five hours or less, while flying can win across very long distances. Compare hotel-to-hotel time, airport transfer, baggage, disruption risk and the exact station pair. Compare domestic flights with rail.
How do I get from a Chinese airport to the city?
Airport rail or metro is usually predictable; licensed taxi or ride-hailing is easier with luggage or a late arrival. Confirm the terminal, last departure and official pickup zone before landing. Use the major-airport transfer guide.
Can tourists use DiDi in China?
International visitors can use DiDi through its app or an Alipay integration and pay with a linked card. Register before you fly, because sign-up needs an SMS code that a data-only eSIM cannot receive. Pin the exact pickup side, match the plate, and never pay cash on top of an app order. Use DiDi safely.
Can Chinese hotels refuse foreign guests?
Hotels must be able to register an international guest correctly, and platform inventory does not always prove staff readiness. Book a property that explicitly accepts your document, then keep the confirmation and exact entrance details. Choose and verify accommodation.
Do I need to register my accommodation in China?
Hotels register foreign guests for you at check-in. Anywhere else, such as a rental flat, a friend's home or an unlicensed guesthouse, you or your host must register within 24 hours. Since 21 September 2026 this can be done online nationwide through the National Immigration Administration site or the 12367 app and mini-programs. Understand hotel and private-stay rules.
Do I need to reserve Chinese attractions in advance?
Passport-based timed reservations are essential for several major museums and icons, especially during holidays. The Palace Museum releases tickets 7 days ahead at 20:00, and Beijing's National Museum releases a large batch at 17:00 the day before. Reserve the hardest anchor first and build flexible neighborhoods around it. Use the attraction reservation guide.
What are toilets like in China?
Public facilities range from modern seated toilets to squat toilets, and paper or soap is not universal. Carry tissues and sanitizer, use larger stations and malls when possible, and do not flush paper where signs or bins indicate otherwise. Prepare for toilets and everyday health.
Can I drink tap water in China?
Do not assume hotel or household tap water is ready to drink unless explicitly treated and declared potable. Use sealed bottled water or properly boiled water and keep the bottle cap clean. See water and health basics.
How do I order food without speaking Chinese?
Use photo menus, translation, Chinese dietary cards and a short confirmation question before payment. A dish name is not a complete ingredient list, so allergies require direct confirmation and a backup plan. Use the food-ordering toolkit.
Is China easy for vegetarian or vegan travelers?
It is manageable in major cities but hidden meat stock, lard, oyster sauce and shared cooking surfaces are common. Buddhist vegetarian restaurants and clearly written dietary cards reduce ambiguity. Plan vegetarian and vegan meals.
Is China safe for tourists?
Violent crime against visitors is relatively uncommon, but traffic, heat, mountains, payment failures, scams and lost passports are practical risks. Use official transport, protect account access and keep emergency and insurance details offline. Read the scenario-based safety guide.
What tourist scams should I watch for in China?
Be cautious when a stranger steers you into a tea room, art event, unofficial taxi or 'free' guided shopping stop. Ask for a written price before accepting a service and leave if the venue or driver resists verification. Recognize common scam scenarios.
Is China safe for solo female travelers?
Many solo women find intercity transport and public spaces manageable, but ordinary precautions still matter. Control late-night pickup points, share route details, avoid isolated mountain roads and choose accommodation with staffed access. Use the solo-female travel guide.
What power plugs are used in China?
Mainland China uses 220V/50Hz and commonly provides Type A, C and I socket forms, sometimes in multi-standard outlets. Bring a compact adapter and check that chargers support 100–240V before plugging them in. Pack power and travel essentials.
Can I travel in China without speaking Chinese?
Yes, especially on a planned city route, but English coverage is inconsistent. Save Chinese place names, hotel addresses, ticket screenshots and a few problem-solving phrases offline. Use the practical language guide.
Do people tip in China?
Routine tipping is not expected in ordinary restaurants, taxis or hotels. Watch instead for small add-ons such as tea, tissue or tableware charges, which you can decline before using them. Hotels and upscale restaurants may add a 10% service charge. A clearly agreed gratuity may appear on private tours. Understand private-tour pricing.
Can tourists get a tax refund when shopping in China?
Eligible overseas visitors can claim departure tax refunds on qualifying purchases from participating stores when current minimums, documents and export checks are met. Keep the goods, passport and digital or paper records available until customs processing is complete. Follow the current tax-refund process.
Can I fly a drone in China?
Registration, real-name requirements, airspace, weight class and local scenic-area bans can all apply. Do not launch near airports, military or sensitive sites, crowds or protected attractions simply because an app map looks clear. Check the China drone guide.
How should I prepare for high altitude in China?
Ascend gradually, keep the first days light and recognize that fitness does not prevent altitude illness. Severe headache, confusion, breathlessness at rest or loss of coordination requires urgent descent and medical help. Read the altitude safety guide.
What should I do before leaving China?
Complete any tax-refund or customs process, save receipts, settle refundable deposits and preserve access to payment accounts until the final charge posts. Download tickets and contacts before changing SIMs or losing access to mainland-only services. Use the departure checklist.
