China high-speed railway platform for a 12306 booking guide

How to Book China Train Tickets on 12306

China Railway 12306 is the official railway sales system. Foreign travelers can register with a passport, complete online identity verification, add passengers, buy e-tickets and use the same original passport to enter, board and exit. If the official workflow is too difficult or you want multilingual support, Trip.com trains is a practical third-party alternative.

The interface changes more often than this guide. Follow the field names and success states below rather than matching a screenshot pixel for pixel.

A “reservation” placed before China Railway releases inventory is a request, not an issued ticket. The train number, date, complete station names, class, passenger and confirmation status must all appear on the final booking.

Step 1: Create the Official Account

Open the 12306 English website or the official Railway 12306 app. Confirm the publisher and domain before entering passport data.

Use an email and mobile number you can access during the trip. Enter the Roman-letter name in the same order and spelling required by the current passport field. Do not add a nickname, translate the name into Chinese or silently remove part of a long name to make an error disappear.

The success state is simple: you can sign in again and the profile shows the correct document type and passport number.

Step 2: Verify the Passport Before Sale Day

Foreign passengers must complete real-name identity verification before buying. The current official visitor guidance allows an online passport-information upload for review. Use a clear, uncropped image of the information page, with glare removed and all edges visible.

Check these fields before submission:

  • document type is passport;
  • nationality matches the passport;
  • surname and given names match the machine-readable identity page;
  • passport number has no spaces or swapped letters/numbers;
  • date of birth and expiry date use the requested format;
  • the passport will still be valid on travel day.

Possible states include verified, ready/pre-verified, under review or failed. Do not create several accounts with different spellings while one review is pending. If the system directs you to a station counter, carry the original passport and the account/order details.

Step 3: Add Every Passenger

In My Passengers, add each traveler separately. The official English FAQ says a registered user may buy for passengers whose identity status is “verified” or “ready to be verified.” A group booking still produces a real-name ticket for each person.

For children, use the age and ID-document rules shown in the live flow. Do not assume height alone decides the 2026 fare. A child using a passport should travel with that original document and the adult attached to the booking.

Make one final comparison against the passports before the release date. A ticket issued to the wrong document is not repaired by showing a photocopy at the gate.

Step 4: Search the Exact Station Pair

Search by station, not just city. “Beijing,” “Beijing South” and “Beijing West” are different origins. Shanghai Hongqiao, Shanghai Station and Shanghai South create different hotel transfers. Guangzhou South and Guangzhou Baiyun are not substitutes.

Compare:

  • complete departure and arrival station;
  • departure and arrival clock time;
  • total journey duration;
  • transfer shown, if any;
  • seat or berth class;
  • arrival transport after the train;
  • whether the train operates on your exact date.

The China train transport guide explains station-day timing. The seat-class guide separates second, first and business class from hard, soft and EMU sleeper products.

Step 5: Buy When Inventory Opens

China Railway's normal advance-sale window checked for this guide is 15 days including the travel date, but the operator can adjust it. Different stations and trains can release at different times. Search the live date in 12306 rather than relying on a universal release-time chart copied from a blog.

When the result opens:

  1. choose the exact train;
  2. select each verified passenger;
  3. select the class actually available;
  4. review any seat or berth preference;
  5. confirm the station pair and date again;
  6. pay before the order timer expires;
  7. wait for the issued-ticket confirmation.

An itinerary sheet or reimbursement receipt is not the boarding ticket. The official FAQ states that the original valid ID used for purchase is the travel credential.

Seat Selection Is a Preference, Not Always a Guarantee

On high-speed trains, the interface may offer window/aisle or letter preferences when sufficient inventory exists. For a family or group, the system can split seats when only scattered inventory remains. Read the assigned carriage and seat after issue.

Sleeper level matters more. A request for a lower berth is not a confirmed lower berth until the issued booking states it. If climbing is not safe, do not accept an unsuitable berth and hope another passenger swaps. Use the overnight sleeper guide before payment.

Use the Official Waitlist Correctly

When a train or class is sold out, 12306 can show 候补 (waitlist). The official waitlist queues a request against cancellations or released capacity; it is not a hidden ticket.

Set:

  • acceptable trains and classes;
  • the passenger list;
  • the fulfillment deadline;
  • payment as requested by the live workflow.

Broader acceptable choices improve the chance of fulfillment, but only include trains you would actually take. Keep a separate confirmed fallback when the date is critical. Cancel an unneeded request through the official channel rather than leaving several overlapping bookings active.

How waitlists behave in practice.

  • Why intermediate stops sell out first. On long routes, seats are often held first for end-to-end passengers, so tickets between intermediate stops show "waitlist" at once. Those seats are frequently released later, often a few days before departure.
  • Reading the success estimate. 12306 shows a percentage estimate. Above about 60% usually succeeds. In the 40–60% range there is still a good chance if end-to-end seats remain. Below 40%, add more trains.
  • Fulfillment deadline. Setting a later deadline, such as up to a few days before departure, keeps the request active for releases.
  • Buying a longer segment. Buying a ticket that covers your trip but runs a stop or two further (买长乘短) can confirm immediately. You may get off early, but the unused part is not refunded.

If every waitlist fails. Some passengers buy a short ticket on the right train, board, and go straight to the conductor's car to register for an upgrade to their real destination.

  • How it went: one passenger did this in September 2026 and got a standing ticket for the remaining ¥64.50.
  • The catch: registration is first come, first served, only about ten people may succeed, and sleepers are rarely available.
  • Staying in reach: stay near the conductor's car or you will be skipped.

This is a last resort for someone willing to stand, not a plan.

Trip.com's “book when tickets go on sale” service is different from the China Railway waitlist. Read whether the order is pending, issued or failed.

Spring Festival 2027: Build a Ticket Plan, Not a Prediction

Lunar New Year Day is February 6, 2027, but the State Council had not published the mainland holiday block or adjusted working weekends when this section was checked on October 4, 2026. The wider Spring Festival travel rush will extend beyond the official days off, but its exact railway dates, extra trains and temporary sales measures are not yet confirmed. Do not copy the 2026 holiday or rush dates into a 2027 booking.

Recent traveler discussions consistently describe the same split: central business districts can feel quiet while major stations and famous attractions are crowded; smaller restaurants may close while tourist-area and hotel dining continues. Those reports are useful for building fallbacks, not for predicting a specific train.

Use this sequence:

  1. Verify every passport now. Do not wait for the sale date to discover an account or passenger-name problem.
  2. Limit intercity moves. Stay in one base over Lunar New Year Eve and Day when possible; fewer departures mean fewer sold-out dependencies.
  3. Set the real release reminder. The normal window is currently 15 days including departure, but use the live 12306 result for your train and station.
  4. Submit only usable waitlist choices. The official 12306 waitlist rules say fulfillment follows request order and can continue until the deadline you choose, no later than 20 minutes before departure. A waitlist is not a boarding plan.
  5. Hold a different-mode fallback. For a critical international connection, compare a confirmed flight, slower train or extra hotel night before the peak inventory opens.
  6. Recheck temporary rules. Spring Festival refund or change conditions may differ from the standard table below.

The Chinese New Year 2027 travel guide explains which dates are confirmed, what remains unannounced and how to plan food, attractions and city bases around the transport peak.

Change a Ticket

12306 calls a change an endorsement. The official FAQ says one ticket may normally be changed once when capacity exists. Changing the arrival station has stricter timing and can prevent another change. The live flow controls the fee and price difference.

Before confirming, compare the new train, station, date, class and fare. Some changes require paying the new amount while the original amount is returned later to the original payment method. A change made after departure has narrower options and may make the ticket non-refundable.

Do not buy a second ticket as a “change” unless you understand that both orders remain active and one must be canceled under its own rules.

Refund a Ticket

The official 12306 English FAQ currently states:

Refund time before departureStandard fee
8 days or moreno refund service fee
More than 48 hours5%
24–48 hours10%
Under 24 hours20%

Special Spring Festival, change and accidental-purchase rules can differ. If a reimbursement receipt was printed or cash was used, a station step may be required. Refunds normally return to the original payment method.

Common Errors and the Safest Response

Name or passport mismatch

Stop. Compare the account, passenger and passport character by character. Contact the official channel or go to a station counter with the original document. Do not edit random fields until an order happens to pass.

Identity verification is pending

Wait for the stated review period and preserve the submission. Use Trip.com or a station counter when sale day cannot wait, but keep the passenger spelling identical.

The passport upload keeps failing

Upload the complete passport information page, not a separate portrait or passport-style headshot. Keep all page edges visible, remove glare and avoid a cropped screenshot. If the official app's scanner or upload returns you to the previous screen without a useful error, try the official 12306 website with the same account and identical spelling. That is a troubleshooting path, not a guarantee; use the staffed station counter when the official system still directs you there.

Payment fails

Check whether the order is still unpaid and whether inventory was held. Avoid tapping pay repeatedly across several channels. Keep a second card or wallet and read the Alipay setup guide.

No trains appear

Check date, sale window and station spelling. The city may use another station, or the timetable may not yet be released. Do not assume “no result” means the route has no railway.

Passport will not scan at the gate

Use the staffed/manual channel with the original passport and booking details. Arrive early; never join a resident-ID-only queue repeatedly while departure approaches.

Boarding Checklist

  • original passport used in the booking;
  • exact station in Chinese and English;
  • date, train number, carriage and seat/berth saved offline;
  • security and walking margin at a large station;
  • baggage within current railway limits;
  • arrival hotel address and last local transport checked.

Book the train you can board and recover from—not merely the fastest number in the search results.
