China 240-Hour Transit Routes
China's 240-hour transit-without-visa policy currently covers ordinary-passport holders from 57 countries, using 65 eligible ports in 24 provincial-level regions. You need a confirmed onward ticket from country or region A, through mainland China, to a different country or region C. Your nationality, entry port, exit port and every place you visit must all fit the current policy.
Start with the complete 240-hour transit eligibility guide. This page solves the second problem: once you qualify, which route is practical?
The Route Test Before Any Booking
| Question | It must be true |
|---|---|
| Passport | Your ordinary passport is on the current 57-country list |
| Direction | The place before mainland China and the place after it are different countries or regions |
| Ticket | The onward international seat and date are confirmed within 240 hours |
| Ports | Both entry and exit are on the current eligible-port list |
| Geography | Every overnight and day trip stays inside the permitted area |
| Purpose | Tourism, business, visits or transit—not work, study or journalism requiring prior approval |
The National Immigration Administration's current transit-policy page controls. Airline staff and border officers decide from the actual itinerary and documents, not from a screenshot of a blog.
Correct and Incorrect Third-Country Examples
| Route | Result | Why |
|---|---|---|
| United States → Shanghai → Japan | Normally valid direction | A and C are different |
| United States → Shanghai → Hong Kong | Normally valid direction | Hong Kong is treated as a different region for this route test |
| Hong Kong → Guangzhou → Thailand | Normally valid direction | The journey continues to a different country |
| United States → Shanghai → United States | Not a transit to C | Returning to the same country fails the A–B–C pattern |
| Japan → Beijing → Osaka | Not a transit to C | Both sides are Japan even though the cities differ |
| Seoul → Shanghai → Beijing → Seoul | Not valid | The final country matches the origin, and every domestic leg must also stay within the allowed plan |
A separate domestic ticket does not repair an invalid international route. Conversely, separate international tickets may be accepted when all confirmed sectors are visible, but the airline can have its own through-check, baggage and boarding rules. Carry the whole itinerary offline.
Three Days: One Gateway, No Hotel Move
Shanghai in three days
- Arrival: Pudong (PVG) or Hongqiao (SHA), if shown on the current eligible list.
- Day 1: recover, Bund–Nanjing Road–People's Square cluster.
- Day 2: French Concession or one museum plus a Huangpu riverfront evening.
- Day 3: Pudong skyline or a half-day in Zhujiajiao, then return with a large airport buffer.
- Exit: an eligible Shanghai, Jiangsu or Zhejiang port to country/region C.
This is the lowest-risk first transit because no hotel move consumes the middle day. Use the Shanghai layover guide for an 8–24-hour connection instead.
Beijing in three days
- Day 1: Central Axis cluster after checking into one central base.
- Day 2: one Great Wall section; do not combine it with a timed museum.
- Day 3: Temple of Heaven or Summer Palace, then airport.
Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei form a useful regional system, but a three-day plan should not chase all three. Capital (PEK) and Daxing (PKX) are far apart; never assume an airport change is a connection.
Five Days: Use One Rail Corridor
Shanghai → Suzhou → Hangzhou
| Day | Sleep | Plan |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Shanghai | arrival and Bund evening |
| 2 | Shanghai | museum or neighborhood day |
| 3 | Suzhou or Shanghai | gardens and canal district; exact station matters |
| 4 | Hangzhou | West Lake route after a high-speed train |
| 5 | — | exit through an eligible Shanghai or Hangzhou port |
This route stays inside the Shanghai–Jiangsu–Zhejiang system and uses frequent rail. Buy the exact station pair on Trip.com trains, then verify it on the issued ticket.
Beijing → Tianjin → Beijing
Use Beijing for three nights and Tianjin for one or as a day trip. The high-speed ride is short; security, station access and hotel movement are not. Exit from an eligible port and keep the final night near the departure airport when the flight is early.
Guangzhou → Shenzhen → Hong Kong
Enter through an eligible Guangdong port, use Guangzhou and Shenzhen inside the mainland segment, then exit to Hong Kong if Hong Kong is country/region C in the actual route. Read the Hong Kong and Macau crossings guide before choosing West Kowloon, Shenzhen Bay, Futian or another control point.
Ten Days: A Multi-Province Route Only When Every Leg Fits
A practical high-speed-rail spine is:
- Shanghai — 3 nights. Recover and keep one weather-flexible day.
- Xi'an — 2 nights. Use the issued train's exact arrival station; reserve the Terracotta Warriors before the move.
- Beijing — 4 nights. Central Axis, one Great Wall day and one flexible museum or neighborhood day.
- Exit — day 10. Fly from PEK or PKX to country/region C.
This route is only legal if the current NIA policy permits the chosen entry, exit and every provincial-level region crossed or visited. The 2026 policy allows cross-region movement within specified areas, but the list can change. Recheck it before buying a non-refundable train or flight.
Do not use a 10-day transit as permission to enter Tibet or another area with separate permit rules. Do not add a city merely because the train passes through it. A permitted rail corridor and permission to stop overnight are different planning questions.
Counting the 240 Hours
The exact clock follows the current border rule and the entry record. Do not convert “10 days” into ten hotel nights. Plan to leave well before the deadline, retain a same-day alternative and keep the onward international ticket visible.
Build the final 24 hours around the departure port:
- sleep in the departure city;
- recheck the airport or station and terminal;
- allow for hotel-to-port travel, security and exit procedures;
- avoid a last-day excursion that can be delayed by weather or traffic;
- keep the next-country entry documents ready because the airline may inspect them.
If the Airline or Border Officer Questions the Route
Show the passport, confirmed inbound and outbound tickets, hotel bookings and a simple city-by-city itinerary. Ask what specific condition appears not to be met. Do not argue from an influencer post or translate “visa-free entry” as if it were an unconditional admission right.
What 2026 travelers ran into.
- Check-in. A traveler flying Chicago–Detroit–Seoul–Zhangjiajie was initially told "the system won't let you through." They had printed the policy and their onward ticket and asked the agent to check TIMATIC manually, and boarding was then approved. Carry the printed policy page and the onward booking.
- Arrival. A US passport holder flying Japan–Shanghai–Korea had filled in the online arrival card beforehand, choosing "transit" as the purpose. At Pudong the officer asked only for the ticket out of China, and the whole arrival took about 30 minutes. Others report a few simple questions before the temporary entry permit stamp. The stamp shows your permitted stay area and end date.
- A change of plan. A family whose child fell ill could not continue to Hong Kong as their transit route required. After calling 12367 they applied at a local exit-entry office for a stay visa supported by a doctor's note. It was issued the same day for ¥160.
If the route is complicated, call 12367 before departure and save the consultation details. The final decision still belongs to the carrier at boarding and Chinese immigration at the port.
Do not casually cancel the onward country/region C sector after entry. A medical or other genuine emergency can require a formal stay-permit process supported by documents; it does not automatically turn an A–China–C admission into an A–China–A holiday. Contact 12367 and the local exit-entry administration before changing the route, and complete accommodation registration promptly—your hotel normally does this, while a private stay requires separate registration. People staying with family have been phoned by local police within days to complete it. Since 21 September 2026 the host can register online nationwide through the National Immigration Administration's 12367 app or mini-programs.
Book in the Safe Order
- Confirm nationality and the live NIA port/area list.
- Price the international A–China–C route with a changeable onward sector.
- Reserve scarce attractions with passport details that exactly match the traveler.
- Book refundable hotels inside the permitted area through Trip.com hotels.
- Buy domestic trains only after the entry and exit structure is stable.
- Recheck the rule, terminals and opening notices 72 hours before departure.
If your passport also qualifies for ordinary 30-day visa-free entry, use that simpler basis rather than forcing the trip into a transit structure.
