China Domestic Flights
Fly when the route crosses a very long distance, mountains or a weak rail corridor. Take high-speed rail when city-center access, frequency and weather resilience beat the shorter advertised flight time. Compare hotel door to hotel door, not “two hours by air” with “six hours by train.”
Flight or Train?
| Choose a flight when | Choose rail when |
|---|---|
| the train consumes most of a day or needs an awkward transfer | the direct ride is roughly six hours or less |
| the destination is far from the high-speed network | both stations connect cleanly to your hotels |
| a nonstop flight saves a hotel night or full day | flight airports sit far outside both cities |
| altitude or road geography makes overland travel difficult | summer thunderstorms or winter visibility make aviation fragile |
Beijing–Shanghai is often a rail decision; Shanghai–Kashgar is an air decision. Chengdu–Jiuzhaigou depends on the exact rail/road and flight schedule, not a national rule.
Book With the Passport Name
Use the operating airline's official app/site or compare Trip.com flights. Enter the passenger name and passport number exactly as required by the booking channel. Carry that original passport.
Check before paying:
- operating carrier, not only marketing carrier;
- departure airport and terminal;
- baggage included in the fare brand;
- change and refund conditions;
- whether the itinerary contains a protected connection;
- destination-airport transfer after the last public transport.
Low headline fares can exclude checked baggage. A ticket sold by kilograms or pieces is not clarified by the aircraft type; the fare conditions control.
Passport Check-In
Online check-in and mobile boarding passes are not guaranteed for every foreign-passport itinerary. Be prepared to use a staffed counter. Keep the booking reference, Chinese airport name and operating flight number offline.
Arrive earlier during major holidays, at unfamiliar mega-airports, with checked luggage or when the booking name has any ambiguity. After check-in, retain passport, boarding pass and baggage receipt together.
Power Banks: CCC Is Mandatory on Domestic Flights
The Civil Aviation Administration of China has prohibited passengers from carrying power banks without a clear CCC mark, with an unclear mark, or from recalled models/batches on domestic flights since 28 June 2025. See the CAAC notice.
Power banks belong in cabin baggage, not checked luggage. Capacity limits and airline approval rules still apply in addition to CCC. Do not cover the label, carry a swollen device or assume a foreign safety mark replaces CCC at Chinese domestic screening.
Baggage Is Fare-Specific
Read the exact allowance for cabin dimensions, weight, checked pieces and sports equipment. Domestic carriers and fare families differ. A code-share can apply the operating carrier's airport process while the seller displays another brand.
Remove passport, medication, batteries, valuables and the first night's essentials before checking a bag. Photograph the bag and tag. For a self-transfer, you may need to collect and recheck it even inside China.
Delays and Cancellations
Thunderstorms, typhoons, air-traffic flow, winter weather and late aircraft can disrupt a domestic flight. Build slack before an international departure, cruise, timed permit or last train. Separate tickets transfer the missed-connection risk to the traveler unless written terms say otherwise.
When disruption occurs:
- verify status in the operating airline's official channel;
- preserve the boarding pass, delay message and receipts;
- ask whether rebooking, meals or accommodation apply to this cause and ticket;
- compare rail only after confirming airport-to-station time and live inventory;
- notify the hotel or tour before its no-show cutoff.
What you are entitled to
China's flight rules separate the causes:
| Cause | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Weather, air traffic control or other events outside the airline's control | You can rebook or refund free, but cash compensation is not normally paid. The airline should still update you regularly, and help with meals or a hotel during long delays. |
| The airline's own reasons (schedule changes, crew or aircraft problems, overbooking) | Free rebooking or refund, and often cash compensation under the airline's published policy. Payments of a few hundred yuan per person are common. |
Practical tactics.
- Rebooking onto another airline: if the airline cancels, ask for a free change to the nearest suitable flight, including on another carrier. Agents usually offer the same airline first.
- Compensation: in October 2026 one passenger moved a day earlier by an airline schedule cancellation received ¥400 per person, paid within seven working days.
- Refunds: wait for the airline's own cancellation notice before refunding, so it is processed as an involuntary, fee-free refund.
- Return-leg cancellations: if the return leg is cancelled on a separately booked round trip, you can argue for a fee-free refund of the outbound too.
- Escalating: if the airline or booking platform won't resolve it, file a complaint with CAAC's 12326 service on its website or app. Choosing the "direct to company" option often brings a call from the airline within a day or two. Attach the cancellation SMS, booking and receipts.
Airport Transfer Is Part of the Fare
Beijing, Shanghai and Chengdu each have airports or terminals with very different city access. A cheaper flight into a distant airport can lose the saving in time and taxi cost. Use the eight-airport transfer guide before choosing the flight.
For a late arrival, save the signed taxi or ride-hailing pickup zone and the hotel address in Chinese. Compare an exact Trip.com airport transfer only after the flight and terminal are final.
Safe Booking Checklist
- passport name and number match;
- operating carrier and terminal confirmed;
- baggage allowance visible in writing;
- CCC-compliant power bank in cabin bag;
- change/refund terms saved;
- transfer and late-arrival fallback priced;
- one-night buffer before an unprotected international flight when the risk warrants it.
The fastest transport is the one that completes the whole journey reliably.
