Hong Kong, Macau and Mainland Border Crossings

Updated October 4, 2026

Hong Kong, Macau and mainland China have separate immigration systems. Moving between them is an international-style border crossing: you exit one jurisdiction, complete entry formalities for the next and then restart local transport on the other side.

Choose the crossing by the door-to-door route, not the nearest border pin. Immigration time, luggage, the last train or bus and the location of your hotel matter more than the scheduled ride alone.

A practical rule from frequent cross-border travelers is to match both ends: East Rail for Luohu/Futian, high-speed rail for a luggage-heavy Kowloon-to-Futian/Shenzhen North trip, a through coach when it removes repeated luggage changes, and Huanggang only when its 24-hour operation solves a real late-night need. “Quieter port” is not useful if the onward bus has stopped.

Which Crossing Should You Use?

Hours come from the current Hong Kong Immigration Department control-point table and Macau government sources. Typhoons, crowd controls, maintenance and special events can still change access.

Hong Kong to Shenzhen

Lo Wu to Luohu

Take Hong Kong's East Rail Line to Lo Wu, complete Hong Kong departure and mainland entry, then emerge at Luohu Port beside Shenzhen Railway Station and Metro Lines 1 and 9.

Use this route for a Luohu hotel, Dongmen, Shenzhen Railway Station or an onward train from the conventional station. It is usually a poor choice for western Shenzhen or an early flight from Bao'an Airport. During peak periods, the immigration queue can be longer than the rail ride.

Lok Ma Chau Spur Line to Futian Checkpoint

Take the East Rail Line to Lok Ma Chau, then cross on foot to Futian Checkpoint. Shenzhen Metro Lines 4 and 10 continue from the mainland side. This is a strong choice for Futian, the civic centre and hotels near Line 4.

Do not confuse this with Lok Ma Chau/Huanggang, the 24-hour vehicle crossing. Lok Ma Chau Spur Line/Futian Checkpoint currently closes at 22:30.

Shenzhen Bay

Shenzhen Bay works best for Nanshan, Houhai, Shekou, Shenzhen Bay and cross-boundary coaches that match the final Hong Kong destination. On the Hong Kong side, buses connect the control point with the New Territories and urban transport. On the Shenzhen side, continue by local bus, taxi or ride-hailing.

It is not automatically faster for Central, Tsim Sha Tsui or Futian. Compare the full chain, including the road approach and border queue.

Heung Yuen Wai to Liantang

This newer crossing is useful for eastern Hong Kong or the eastern side of Shenzhen. It supports both passenger and vehicle movements, but the passenger checkpoint currently operates 07:00–22:00. Use it when the onward bus or road connection is clearly better than East Rail—not simply because the immigration hall may look quieter.

High-Speed Rail at Hong Kong West Kowloon

West Kowloon is the clearest option when you have a confirmed train to Futian, Shenzhen North, Guangzhou South or another mainland city and the Hong Kong hotel works well with Kowloon Station, Austin or Tsim Sha Tsui.

When leaving Hong Kong, complete security plus both Hong Kong and mainland immigration before boarding. MTR advises that the process normally takes around 30–45 minutes, while passport holders, staffed-counter users and holiday travelers should allow more. Follow the current West Kowloon departure process and your ticket's boarding cutoff.

Compare cross-boundary trains on Trip.com only after checking the exact mainland station. Futian Port, Futian Railway Station and Shenzhen North are different places.

Hong Kong to Macau or Zhuhai

Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge

The bridge crossing operates 24 hours. The basic public-transport version has three steps:

  1. local Hong Kong transport to the Hong Kong Port;
  2. immigration, then the bridge shuttle bus to Zhuhai Port or Macau Port;
  3. immigration and local bus, shuttle, taxi or ride-hailing to the final destination.

The official bridge site lists the shuttle at HK$65 by day and HK$70 overnight, with daytime defined as 06:00–23:59. Through coaches can remove one local transfer, but their stops and schedules are operator-specific. Check the current bridge transport page before travel.

For Hong Kong International Airport connections, do not enter Hong Kong by mistake if you intend to use an airside or transfer-only coach. Follow the airport's eligibility and baggage rules for the exact service.

Ferry

Ferries can be more convenient when your hotel is near a working ferry terminal, but schedules, routes and severe-weather cancellations change. Price the airport or hotel transfer on both ends. The bridge is more resilient overnight; the ferry can be more direct for some central-district trips.

Macau to Zhuhai and Mainland China

Gongbei / Border Gate

This is the most convenient crossing for Macau Peninsula and Zhuhai Railway Station. The Macau Border Gate is directly opposite Gongbei Port. Current hours are 06:00–01:00 the next day.

Use Gongbei for an onward train from Zhuhai Station, but do not book a train immediately after your expected border arrival. Add walking, two immigration controls, security, station entry and a crowd buffer.

Hengqin

Hengqin operates 24 hours and uses joint inspection arrangements. It is the better fit for Cotai, Taipa, the University of Macau area, Hengqin resorts and late-night movement. It is less convenient for Zhuhai Station or central Macau Peninsula unless the road connection still wins.

Foreign-passport holders use staffed/manual channels when they are not eligible for automated clearance. Follow the hall signs rather than joining a resident-only e-channel queue.

For a Cotai or Taipa stay, Hengqin often removes a cross-Macau transfer; for Zhuhai Station and the Macau Peninsula, Gongbei is usually more direct. Qingmao can be efficient for eligible pedestrian travelers near Zhuhai Station, while Wanzai's short ferry is useful only when its operating hours and the Macau Inner Harbour endpoint fit the trip. Verify passport eligibility and live service before choosing either as a fallback.

What Happens at the Border

  1. Keep the passport used for your ticket and entry basis accessible.
  2. Exit the jurisdiction you are leaving.
  3. Walk or ride through the controlled connection.
  4. Complete arrival formalities for the next jurisdiction.
  5. Collect or keep your luggage as the service requires.
  6. Restart local transport using that jurisdiction's payment, map and mobile-network setup.

Do not pack medication, entry evidence, train tickets or the hotel address in inaccessible checked luggage. Save the Chinese address for the mainland hotel and the English/Chinese name for the Hong Kong or Macau hotel.

Payments, Internet and Maps Change at the Border

  • Mainland China: Alipay/WeChat Pay, Amap and mainland mobile-network rules are the practical baseline.
  • Hong Kong: Octopus, international cards, Google Maps and the unrestricted internet work normally.
  • Macau: Macau patacas and Hong Kong dollars are widely used, but change may be returned in patacas; local buses and hotel shuttles use their own systems.

An eSIM may cover all three jurisdictions but route traffic differently. Read the internet guide, payment setup and navigation guide before the crossing day.

How a Crossing Affects Visa-Free Days

Hong Kong and Macau are outside mainland immigration control. Leaving mainland China for either one ends that mainland stay. Returning is a new mainland entry, and you must qualify again under a visa, the 30-day visa-free policy, Hainan's regional policy or another valid route.

For 240-hour visa-free transit, Hong Kong and Macau can count as the third country or region in a qualifying route—for example, Tokyo → Shanghai → Hong Kong. The itinerary must still use an eligible port and stay within the permitted area. Read the 240-hour transit guide before booking separate tickets.

For a multi-city plan, the Guangzhou–Shenzhen–Hong Kong route explains where to place the border day without sacrificing a sightseeing day.

Final Crossing Checklist

  • Confirm both sides' entry requirements for your passport.
  • Check the control point's current hours and severe-weather notices.
  • Add a queue buffer before the last train, bus or ferry.
  • Carry the original passport and onward booking.
  • Save the exact mainland station or port name in Chinese.
  • Treat a 24-hour checkpoint and a 24-hour onward connection as separate questions.
