China Travel Without Speaking Chinese
Updated October 4, 2026
You do not need fluent Chinese, but you should not make one live translation app the only way to reach your hotel, explain an allergy, or find the correct station. Save the critical information as Chinese text and screenshots before travel.
Build a Three-Layer Translation Setup
| Layer | Best use | What to prepare |
|---|---|---|
| Text and voice translation | Short conversations and questions | Download the Chinese offline language pack; test both directions |
| Camera translation | Menus, signs and machine screens | Photograph one section at a time; confirm numbers separately |
| Saved Chinese cards | High-stakes repeated messages | Hotel address, allergy, medicine, destination and emergency contact |
Apple Translate, Microsoft Translator and the translation tools inside major Chinese apps can all help, but features and offline support vary by device and region. Google services may be unavailable on a standard mainland connection. Choose the app after you choose your China connectivity setup, then test it in airplane mode.
Save These Cards Offline
Create a note and screenshot containing:
- hotel name, full Chinese address, reception phone and nearest entrance;
- each intercity station in Chinese, including the direction word such as 北京南站 (Beijing South);
- a restaurant allergy or dietary card;
- your next destination for a taxi driver;
- passport-loss and insurer contacts;
- “Please call this number” plus a trusted contact.
For maps, save the exact POI and entrance using the navigation workflow. A translated place name is not a substitute for the correct map pin.

Station and Direction Words

|---|---|---|
| 东 / 西 / 南 / 北 | East / West / South / North | 上海虹桥站 is not 上海站 |
| 站 | station | 火车站 = railway station |
| 机场 | airport | 首都机场 = Capital Airport |
| 航站楼 | terminal | 2号航站楼 = Terminal 2 |
| 进站 / 出站 | enter / exit station | Follow the correct flow |

Chinese hand-number gestures are not universal enough to use alone for a ticket, platform or price. Show the written Arabic number and ask the other person to confirm it on screen.
A Communication Workflow That Works
Ask one short question, show the Chinese text, and point to the relevant ticket or map. Let the other person type the reply. For a platform, pickup zone, medicine dose or price, repeat the number back visually. Do not hand over an unlocked phone containing payments or identity documents; hold it while the other person points.
Install only the apps that support a real task using the essential-app guide. Translation is the conversation layer; saved Chinese addresses, exact bookings and offline screenshots are the recovery layer.
