Forbidden City courtyards requiring a timed reservation

China Attraction and Museum Reservations

The difficult part of a popular China attraction is often not payment but identity. The booking must use a supported document, the name and passport number must match, the release time may follow China Standard Time and the original passport may be checked at the gate.

Reserve the scarce anchor first, then place hotels and transport around it. A screenshot of a QR code, an order request or a reseller chat is not proof of admission.

The Universal Booking Workflow

  1. Find the venue's official website, verified WeChat account or official mini-program.
  2. Read the current visitor notice—not an old social post—for closure day, release window and accepted documents.
  3. Create the account before release time and add travelers only where the official flow permits.
  4. Choose passport or the exact foreign-document option, not a mainland resident ID placeholder.
  5. Enter every traveler's identity exactly as printed.
  6. Select date, time slot, ticket type and any add-on exhibition separately.
  7. Pay or confirm the free reservation.
  8. Save the successful order, cancellation rule and gate.
  9. Carry the original passport used in the order.

Interfaces change. The stable checkpoints are: official channel, matching identity, dated slot, successful order and original document.

The table is a planning alarm, not a permanent promise. Venues can change capacity, release batches, holiday opening and renovation access without waiting for this guide's next update.

WeChat and Alipay Mini-Programs

Many venues use a mini-program rather than a conventional English website. Search the exact Chinese venue name from its official site or scan the QR code published by the venue. A similar logo or translated name is not enough.

Before sale time:

  • connect the wallet or payment method;
  • check whether a foreign phone number can receive the code;
  • locate the document-type menu;
  • prepare Chinese names for the venue and gate;
  • test whether the passport number fits the field;
  • avoid sharing passport photos with an unverified seller.

When a foreign passport is not supported online, look for an official English portal, email reservation, service counter or hotline. Do not enter a false resident-ID number.

Palace Museum: The Booking Controls the Day

The Palace Museum sells no same-day ticket. The current official notice says general admission and the Treasure and Clock galleries open seven days before the visit at 20:00. Every visitor needs a real-name reservation. Enter at Meridian Gate and leave through the north or east exit.

The route is one-way enough that it affects the rest of the day. Do not schedule a southern Beijing attraction immediately after a north-gate exit without transfer time. Keep a separate Tian'anmen-area reservation when that area requires one; a Palace Museum ticket does not silently include every surrounding checkpoint.

If the official inventory is gone, compare an exact Trip.com Forbidden City product only if it is a legitimate guided product with dated admission, licensed operator, passport handling and a written cancellation rule. The Palace Museum warns that it has not authorized third parties to act as ordinary ticket agents. No seller can create official inventory after it is closed.

National Museum: Free Still Means Reserved

The National Museum currently releases free timed slots at 17:00 up to seven days ahead. Use the official English reservation system. Carry the original document and confirmation, and arrive within the booked window.

Three no-shows can restrict an account under the current rule. Cancel through the original channel when plans change. A Trip.com National Museum product should be evaluated as a guided service or package, not as a way around the museum's identity control.

Xi'an: Distinguish Three Different Products

The Shaanxi History Museum main building, its Qin-Han Gallery and the Terracotta Warriors are separate places with separate booking systems and locations.

  • Main building: limited free timed inventory; current English notice says five days ahead at 17:00.
  • Qin-Han Gallery: current official page allows individual entry with a valid document, but check temporary notices.
  • Terracotta Warriors: paid official advance booking, well outside central Xi'an.

Do not book “Shaanxi museum” and assume it means the building beside Xiaozhai. Do not pair the Terracotta Warriors with a fixed afternoon museum slot unless the road and entry margin work. If you need transport and interpretation, compare the exact Trip.com Terracotta Warriors product.

Sanxingdui: Admission and Transport Are One Booking Problem

Sanxingdui sits in Guanghan, not central Chengdu. A dated ticket without a train/vehicle and return plan is incomplete. Check the official opening notice, admission session and which galleries are operating. Then compare the exact Trip.com Sanxingdui product if you want bundled transport or guiding.

Do not promise a named artifact or restoration-hall access. Conservation, gallery rotations and capacity control can change the live visit.

What to Do When Tickets Are Sold Out

Use this order:

  1. Recheck the official channel for legitimate returned inventory or another session.
  2. Move the visit date while hotel and train bookings are still changeable.
  3. Use an official branch, related museum or exterior/heritage route that does not require the same slot.
  4. Compare a licensed guided product only when its admission mechanism is stated and plausible.
  5. Replace the attraction and keep the day coherent.

Release patterns that recover tickets

Visitors in 2026 found these repeatable patterns. They are observations, not official promises:

  • Palace Museum. Tickets open 7 days ahead at 20:00 in rounds every few minutes.
    • Before release: save every visitor's passport details in the mini-program, and don't leave the queue page once it appears.
    • Returns: returned and unpaid tickets reappear from about 20:40, and a large batch often comes back around 21:00.
    • Slots: afternoon slots are easier than mornings.
  • National Museum. The 7-day-ahead release at 17:00 is only part of the allocation. A larger batch for tomorrow appears at 17:00 the day before and often lasts until about 18:30. Returned tickets for other dates show up around 17:30.
  • Shaanxi History Museum. Tickets release 5 days ahead at 17:00 and are claimed in seconds; more than 10,000 people had pre-filled details for a single August slot.
    • Before release: pre-fill visitor details for two or three slots, then switch at once if the first fails.
    • Returns: unpaid orders flow back from about 17:05–17:10. One visitor got a weekend ticket at 17:28 by repeatedly tapping book while the returned-ticket counter showed stock.
    • Slots: afternoon slots (14:30–16:30) are easier.
    • Paid fallback: a paid special-exhibition ticket (about ¥100 in 2026) also admits you to the free permanent galleries without a separate reservation.
  • No-shows. Several museums restrict accounts after repeated no-shows. Cancel in the order page if your plans change.

Do not buy a screenshot, borrowed QR code, resident-ID booking or “staff entrance.” Real-name mismatches can fail at the gate and expose passport data.

Useful substitutes include the Qin-Han Gallery for a missed main-building reservation, a Beijing Central Axis exterior route for a missed Palace Museum day, or a provincial/city museum with live inventory.

Common Failure Modes

The name fields look reversed

Follow the passport and the venue's field labels. Save the confirmation and verify the displayed traveler before payment. Do not change the passport spelling to make it look more Western.

The payment succeeded but no ticket appears

Check the official order list and payment status. A bank authorization is not the same as a successful venue order. Contact the venue before purchasing again.

The app says the passport is unsupported

Use the venue's published foreign-visitor route: English website, email, hotline or service counter. Keep a screenshot of the exact error for support, but never use the screenshot as an admission claim.

A tour promises entry when official tickets are gone

Ask for the licensed operator, admission category, document deadline, refund trigger and written confirmation. Some venues allocate legitimate group products; others explicitly prohibit ordinary ticket resale. If the mechanism cannot be explained, do not send passport data.
