Shandong

Shandong has two coherent first journeys. Inland, Jinan, Tai'an and Qufu connect spring-city life, Mount Tai and Confucian heritage. On the peninsula, Qingdao, Yantai and Weihai form a coastal route of old ports, beaches, headlands and seafood. Combining both requires at least ten days.

Choose your region

• Inland heritage: Jinan–Tai'an–Qufu in 5–7 days.
• Peninsula coast: Qingdao–Yantai–Weihai in 7–9 days.
• Balanced first trip: Jinan plus Qingdao in 5–6 days when you want one historical city and one coast.
• Mount-focused route: base in Tai'an and give Mount Tai a weather-flexible day rather than forcing it between trains.

How many days

Three days suit Jinan and Mount Tai, or Qingdao alone. Seven days can cover the inland triangle at a measured pace or the three coastal cities with two-night bases. A full circuit through all six cities needs 12–14 days and works best as an open-jaw journey.

Cities and bases

Jinan's springs and old city form a compact walking day. Tai'an is the practical base for Mount Tai, whose gate and ascent method must be chosen in advance. Qufu needs one full interpretation-led day for the Confucian sites. On the coast, Qingdao deserves at least three nights; Yantai and Weihai each need two if you plan outward headlands or islands.

Six-day inland route

1. Arrive in Jinan and follow the spring-water route through the old city.
2. Choose Shandong Museum or Thousand Buddha Mountain.
3. Travel to Tai'an and prepare for the mountain.
4. Explore Mount Tai using the ascent that fits your fitness and the live weather.
5. Continue to Qufu for the Temple, Cemetery and Kong Family Mansion.
6. Add Confucius Museum or depart by rail.

Seven-day coastal route

Use three nights in Qingdao for the old town, central coast and Mount Lao; two in Yantai for the historic port and nearby coast; and two in Weihai for the city waterfront and one Rongcheng-area road day. Travel in one direction instead of returning to Qingdao after every stop.

When to visit

Spring and autumn suit both routes. Summer is the main coastal season, with crowds, humidity and higher hotel prices. Winter brings wind and cold on the peninsula but fewer visitors. Mount Tai can have ice, fog, storms or strong wind in several seasons; sunrise is never guaranteed.

Getting there and around

Jinan and Qingdao are the main air and rail gateways. Fast rail connects the cities, while Mount Lao, Rongcheng, Penglai and other outer coastal areas need buses or road transfers. Coastal attractions that look close across a bay may require a long drive around it.

Where to stay

Inland, stay near Jinan's old city, Tai'an's chosen mountain transport and Qufu's historic core. On the peninsula, select a neighborhood for the actual coast section you plan to walk. A cheap hotel far inland can turn every beach day into a long commute.

What to book first
