Hebei

Hebei surrounds Beijing, so its major destinations point in different directions rather than forming one compact loop. Chengde is the strongest multi-day base, with the Mountain Resort, distinct imperial temples and access toward Jinshanling. Zhengding and Shijiazhuang form a southern heritage trip; Qinhuangdao and Shanhaiguan form an eastern coast-and-Great-Wall trip.

Choose your region

  • Chengde: imperial landscape and temples in 3 days; add Jinshanling or Saihanba only with extra time.
  • Zhengding and Shijiazhuang: ancient temples, provincial history and an easy rail gateway in 2–3 days.
  • Qinhuangdao coast: Shanhaiguan, Beidaihe and the Bohai coast in 3–5 days.
  • Grassland extension: northern Chengde and Bashang require a dedicated road trip and seasonal planning.

How many days

Three days suit one region. Seven days can combine Beijing with Chengde, or connect Zhengding, Shijiazhuang and Chengde at a measured pace. Crossing from Qinhuangdao to Chengde and then to Shijiazhuang is possible, but it produces a transport-heavy circuit that needs 9–10 days.

Bases and route

Use Chengde city for the Mountain Resort and the outer temples. Jinshanling is a separate Great Wall day with an early road transfer. In the south, Zhengding can be an overnight or a focused visit from Shijiazhuang. On the coast, Qinhuangdao is the transport city, Beidaihe the resort base and Shanhaiguan the historical section.

Five-day Chengde and Great Wall plan

  1. Travel from Beijing or Shijiazhuang to Chengde and explore the old center.
  2. Give the Mountain Resort a full day, using park transport selectively.
  3. Visit two outer temples with different architectural and historical roles.
  4. Make Jinshanling a dedicated Great Wall day, subject to weather and trail access.
  5. Add Chengde Museum or depart with margin.

Do not combine Chengde with Ulan Butong merely because tours advertise both. Grassland routes involve long road time, seasonal conditions and often a separate overnight.

When to visit

Late spring and autumn suit Chengde and Great Wall walking. Summer is popular in Chengde and on the coast, with higher prices and traffic. Winter is cold and windy, while some landscapes and resort services are reduced. Northern grasslands have large day–night temperature changes and a short green season.

Getting there and around

Beijing and Shijiazhuang are the most useful gateways. Rail reaches Chengde, Zhengding and Qinhuangdao, but outer temples, wall sections and grasslands need buses or drivers. Confirm the exact Great Wall entrance and return transport; “Jinshanling,” “Shanhaiguan” and other wall names are not interchangeable products.

Where to stay and what to book

In Chengde, stay between the rail connection and resort area. On the coast, choose Beidaihe for beach time or Qinhuangdao for transport. Reserve summer hotels, Mountain Resort entry, Great Wall transfers and holiday trains first, then recheck weather and trail operation.
