Dali: plan the basin before choosing the postcard
Dali travel is organized by a real landscape: Cangshan rises west of the long Erhai basin, Dali Old Town sits between mountain and lake, Xizhou and Zhoucheng lie to the north-west, and Shuanglang and Little Putuo require an east-shore road day. Shaxi and Weishan are separate county excursions, not extra old-town lanes.
Choose the right route
- 3 days: Dali Old Town and the Three Pagodas; Cangshan; Shuanglang and Little Putuo.
- 4 days: add Xizhou and a focused Zhoucheng tie-dye workshop.
- 5 days: add Shaxi as a 131-kilometer northern excursion or overnight stay.
The map keeps each shore and village in its true relative position. Shaxi is deliberately distant; the diagram does not compress nearly four hours of return driving into a decorative line beside Dali Old Town.
Build the Dali basin first
Dali Old Town and the Three Pagodas form a practical first day, with verified map locations about 1.1 km apart on foot. Use the old town to compare lived-in lanes with commercial streets, then read the surviving pagodas separately from the reconstructed Chongsheng Temple axis.
Cangshan deserves a weather-dependent day. Use only an officially open cableway and signed trail. Wind, lightning, snow, fire controls and maintenance can close a route; never turn a closure into an unofficial hike.

Separate the two lake-shore jobs
The east-shore route uses Shuanglang and Little Putuo as a road day. It is not the same product as walking or cycling a protected section of the west-shore ecological corridor. Do not promise an entire-lake loop and meaningful village time in one day.
North-west of the old town, Xizhou and Zhoucheng form a compact architecture-and-craft day. Seasonal fields remain farms; workshop demonstrations should explain what the visitor actually makes and where products come from.
Choose one longer extension
Shaxi is about 131.4 km / 1 hour 54 minutes by car from Dali Old Town before live road conditions. It suits an overnight or a carefully reserved day trip. Weishan, about 67.1 km / 1 hour 15 minutes south by car, is the shorter heritage-and-food alternative. Do not attempt both as one Dali day.
Where to stay and how to arrive
- Dali Old Town: best for Cangshan, the Three Pagodas and evening lane access.
- Xiaguan / Dali Station area: best for railway, airport and modern transport links.
- Erhai village stay: choose only when lake atmosphere outweighs repeated transfers to other sectors.
