Weishan: a southern alternative to the northern Shaxi excursion
Weishan Ancient Town sits south of Dali and offers a different heritage day: a long, readable street axis, surviving gate and tower landmarks, Nanzhao historical associations and a strong local food identity. Choose it as an alternative excursion, not as a rushed addition to Shaxi or Erhai.

A practical town route
Begin at a verified visitor entrance and walk the principal north–south street, using Gongchen Gate and Xinggong Tower as orientation points. Turn into a small number of side lanes to compare active homes and shops with restored public façades. Allow three to four hours before adding any mountain or temple excursion outside town.
Weishan is not a theme park. Many buildings remain homes or working businesses, so public street access does not include courtyards. Ask before photographing residents or food preparation and avoid blocking narrow storefronts.

Food with clear pricing
The town is known for a broad snack and noodle culture. Choose busy established vendors, confirm portion and ingredient details, and use extra care with raw, wild-mushroom or unfamiliar meat products. Festival food events can transform crowd levels and traffic; a dated festival program is not a permanent operating calendar.
Getting there
From the verified Dali Old Town POI to Weishan Ancient Town, Amap estimates about 67.1 km / 1 hour 15 minutes by car. Rail or bus can be useful from Xiaguan, but “Dali Old Town,” “Dali Station” and the modern Xiaguan urban area are separate departure points. Verify the full first- and last-mile route before choosing a ticket.

Do not schedule Weishan on a flight day. If time allows only one outward town, choose Weishan for a shorter southern heritage-and-food day or Shaxi for a longer northern valley stay.
