Shaxi Ancient Town from Dali
Shaxi lies in Jianchuan County north of the Dali basin. Its historic core around Sideng market square preserves an important market-town layer associated with the Tea Horse Road, but it remains an active valley community rather than a sealed museum village.

Make the distance explicit
From the verified Dali Old Town map location to Shaxi, Amap estimates about 131.4 km / 1 hour 54 minutes by car before mountain traffic, construction, weather or stops. A day trip therefore means close to four hours of road time. Use a reputable reserved car or a currently operating through service with a confirmed return; do not assume a late informal ride will be available.
Stay overnight if you want quiet morning and evening streets, a slower valley walk or an additional Shibaoshan visit. Check accommodation access carefully because vehicles may not reach old-town lanes and stair-heavy historic buildings may lack lifts.
A compact historic route
Start at Sideng market square, identify the old theatre and temple relationship, then continue through public lanes toward the historic bridge and river landscape. Allow three to four hours without Shibaoshan. The Dali government describes Sideng as a rare surviving old market on this route, but commercial restoration and modern guesthouses remain part of the present town.

Stay outside private courtyards and farmland, ask before photographing residents and do not stage animals or working people. Weekly market activity and temporary performances should be checked by current local notice rather than treated as daily fixtures.
Return discipline
Confirm the vehicle, pickup point, driver's contact, road-time buffer and final arrival before beginning the walk. Mountain rain, landslides, fog or holiday congestion can lengthen the route. If you have a same-day train or flight, Shaxi is a poor final-day choice.

Shaxi earns a place in a five-day Dali itinerary only when the distance is visible. It should never appear as a casual add-on after an Erhai loop.
For one night, arrive before late afternoon, walk the core after day-trippers thin out, sleep within easy luggage distance of the vehicle boundary and use the next morning for the river or valley. Shibaoshan needs separate transport, admission and trail planning. Public lanes do not guarantee access to the theatre, temple or private courtyards: distinguish community use, conserved fabric, restored guesthouse and modern retail. Choose a day trip only with a guaranteed return; skip when the group dislikes mountain roads or has a fixed next-day flight.
