Shaanxi
Xi'an is the essential base and deserves four or five days before the rest of Shaanxi. The Terracotta Warriors are an outward full-day chapter of the Xi'an story. Weinan and Mount Hua form an eastern mountain extension; Yan'an leads north into twentieth-century history and the Loess Plateau; Baoji and Hanzhong create western and southern alternatives.
Choose your region
- Xi'an first trip: city walls, museums, religious sites, food neighborhoods and the Terracotta Warriors in 4–6 days.
- Eastern extension: Weinan and Mount Hua for one or two nights, with weather and fitness margins.
- Northern history route: Yan'an, Ganquan and the Shaanxi side of Hukou in 3–5 days.
- Western heritage: Baoji for bronzes, Famen Temple and Mount Taibai choices.
- Southern Shaanxi: Hanzhong for Han history, wetlands and mountain landscapes in a greener climate.
How many days
With three days, stay in Xi'an and select only one major museum plus the Terracotta Warriors. Five days create a balanced first visit. Seven days allow Mount Hua or Baoji. Ten days can connect Xi'an and Yan'an or add Hanzhong, but trying to cover every direction creates repeated returns through Xi'an.
Cities and bases
In Xi'an, stay near a metro station inside or just outside the city wall. Keep the Terracotta Warriors as a dedicated day and do not depend on a late return for a fixed evening show. For Mount Hua, an overnight in Huayin protects an early start and weather changes. Yan'an city is the base for chronological historical sites; Hukou and Ganquan are separate road products.
Routes through the province
Seven-day first route
- Arrive in Xi'an and walk the city wall or a compact old-city area.
- Visit the Terracotta Warriors and Lishan area with interpretation.
- Reserve one major museum, then pair Big Wild Goose Pagoda with its surrounding district.
- Explore the Small Wild Goose Pagoda, Beilin or a second historical cluster.
- Travel to Huayin or Baoji according to your extension.
- Give Mount Hua a full weather-dependent day, or visit Baoji's bronze-led sites.
- Return with margin and depart.
For Yan'an, replace the eastern extension and allow at least three nights. Revolutionary sites make more sense in chronological order; Hukou Waterfall is a separate long road day rather than an afternoon add-on.
When to visit
Spring and autumn are comfortable and popular. Xi'an summers are hot, while winter is cold and drier. Mount Hua can have strong wind, rain, ice or closures in several seasons. Northern Shaanxi has larger temperature swings; southern Hanzhong is wetter and greener.
Getting there and around
Xi'an is the main air and rail hub. Fast rail reaches Huashan North, Baoji, Hanzhong and several northern gateways. The final legs to mountain gates, canyons and Hukou rely on buses, drivers or organized transfers. Confirm whether the ticket names a city station or a scenic-area shuttle.
Where to stay
Choose a Xi'an hotel for metro access and quiet sleep rather than proximity to one crowded food street. Near Mount Hua, stay by the visitor center or transport route that matches your chosen ascent. In Yan'an and Baoji, a central hotel works for city days, but outward attractions may justify a second base.
What to book first
Reserve the most competitive Xi'an museums, Terracotta Warriors entry, Mount Hua transport products, long-distance trains and fixed performances first. Then book hotels. Recheck mountain operation and road access immediately before remote days.
