Hubei

Wuhan is the natural gateway and deserves two or three days. Western Hubei is a different trip: Yichang and the Three Gorges follow the Yangtze, Shennongjia is a forest-and-mountain road journey, and Enshi is a karst and canyon region. Combining all three in one week creates long transfers and little margin for weather.

• Wuhan and Yichang: city history, Hubei Museum and a Three Gorges product in 5–7 days.
• Wuhan and Enshi: urban culture plus canyon and rural karst in 6–8 days.
• Shennongjia loop: use Yichang or Shiyan as a gateway and allow 4–5 days for the mountain section.
• Full western circuit: Yichang–Shennongjia–Enshi needs 8–10 days with road transport and flexible stops.

How many days

Three days suit Wuhan. Seven days can combine Wuhan with either Yichang or Enshi. Ten days allow a measured western loop. Treat cruise embarkation, mountain transfers and scenic shuttle systems as real travel blocks rather than invisible gaps between attractions.

Cities and bases

Wuhan spans Wuchang, Hankou and Hanyang; choose a central metro base and group sights by riverbank. Yichang is the transport base for dam and gorge visits, but different cruises start at different docks. Enshi city is the rail and air gateway, while its canyon, villages and karst sites remain dispersed. Shennongjia usually requires multiple road-based nights.

Seven-day Wuhan and Three Gorges route

1. Arrive in Wuhan and explore one Hankou riverfront cluster.
2. Reserve Hubei Provincial Museum and pair it with East Lake.
3. Cross the Yangtze for a Wuchang history day, then travel to Yichang.
4. Choose a dam-and-gorge excursion or begin the cruise product you actually booked.
5. Continue the river journey or add one nearby landscape.
6. Return to Yichang and keep the afternoon flexible.
7. Depart by rail or air.

For Enshi, replace the river section and use two full scenic days. Do not combine Enshi Grand Canyon with another distant canyon because both names appear under the same city.

When to visit

Spring and autumn are comfortable for Wuhan and western landscapes. Summer is very hot in Wuhan and rainy in the mountains; Shennongjia can be cooler but storms affect roads and trails. Winter is quieter, with possible ice and partial mountain closures. The Yangtze's water, fog and visibility vary by season.

Getting there and around

Wuhan is a major national rail and air hub. Fast trains reach Yichang and Enshi. Beyond those cities, buses, drivers and scenic shuttles control the pace. Confirm the exact cruise terminal, canyon entrance and hotel district; similar attraction names can refer to places hours apart.

Where to stay

In Wuhan, metro access and the correct riverbank matter. In Yichang, stay for the dock or station used next. In Enshi, a city hotel suits arrival nights, but a rural base can reduce one early drive. In Shennongjia, prioritize safe road access and heating over an isolated view.

What to book first

Reserve Hubei Museum, the exact Three Gorges cruise or day product, long-distance rail and mountain transport first. Then book hotels around confirmed departure points. Recheck rain, road and scenic-area notices before western days.
