Pingshan Canyon
Current status, checked 11 September 2026: the official operator posted a suspension notice dated 8 September 2026, and the exact Trip.com shelf displays “Reopening soon.” No later official reopening notice was visible. Do not buy transport or travel to Hefeng on speculation. Check the official Pingshan notices, or call 0718-5282222, and require a dated reopening confirmation first.
When open, Pingshan (鹤峰屏山旅游景区) is a clear-water gorge route in Hefeng County with a short mandatory transit-boat section, substantial stairs and a long mountain transfer from Enshi. It deserves a full day; the famous “floating boat” photograph is only one weather-dependent moment within a much larger logistics problem.
Understand the standard route
The operator's published route guidance—written before the latest upgrades—describes a one-way sequence: roughly 1,900 descending steps to the lower activity area, an 8–10-minute walk to Taohua Ferry, about 12 minutes on the transit boat, then more than 600 steps to the exit. It estimated two to three hours inside. Treat those figures as a baseline, not a promise: construction, water levels, crowd control and reopening arrangements can change entrances or routing.

The descent is not the easy part for every body; sustained downhill steps can be hard on knees, and the exit still climbs. Recent visitor reports broadly agree on the scale even when their counts differ. Bring grippy footwear, water and only a light day bag. This is not a step-free boat excursion.
The boat-in/boat-out option has limits
An alternative reverse route has sometimes been sold outside peak periods. It enters near the exit, descends several hundred steps, rides into the gorge and returns the same way. Two recent groups reported that it still involved roughly 700–800 steps each way; one mixed-age party found that the standard-route walkers reached the main photo area sooner than relatives using the supposed easier option.
Do not assume this product exists after reopening or that it suits limited mobility. Ask the operator for the current step count, operating window, boarding point and return climb. If stairs are already a concern, skipping Pingshan may be the wiser decision.
Weather controls both access and the photograph
The water's apparent colour changes with rainfall, sediment, depth, sun angle and camera position. Rain does not guarantee dreamy mist; strong rain can mean muddy water, exposed walking and a safety closure. The operator states that it closes when severe weather creates rising-water risk. Never use an unofficial viewpoint or pressure staff to run a boat.
Crowds also matter. The regular gorge boat is brief, while queues and paid photo experiences can take longer. The “floating” effect is easiest to see under favourable light and clear water, but it is not a separate natural feature or a result worth blocking a dock for. Optional glass boats, staged platforms and photography are add-ons, not the mandatory transit boat.
The Enshi transfer is the real commitment
The operator places Pingshan about 6.8 kilometres from Hefeng town and gives roughly 2.5 hours from Enshi station under normal conditions. Independent travellers historically changed from an Enshi–Hefeng county coach to a village bus; departure points, timetables and fares can change. A group tour may simplify transfers but lengthen the day with hotel pickups and sales stops.
Before paying, get the exact Enshi pickup point, departure time, admission and transit-boat inclusion, optional-photo exclusions, return time and closure/refund policy in writing. Open the exact Pingshan shelf on Trip.com only to check whether selected-date inventory has resumed; a visible page is not proof that the attraction is open.
If you stay in Hefeng, arrive the previous evening and keep the reopening morning flexible. From Enshi, do not schedule a same-night flight or train after the trip.
Build a real fallback day
For the present closure, keep the day in urban Enshi: Enshi Tusi City is a compact cultural option, while the prefecture museum is better for object-based context. Enshi Grand Canyon is not a casual replacement—it is another major outdoor day and needs its own weather and operating check.
Return to the Enshi guide and leave Pingshan unbooked until a dated official reopening notice appears.
