Three Gorges Dam

The Three Gorges Dam Tourism Area (三峡大坝旅游区) is worth a half day if you want to understand the project's physical scale and the way ships bypass it. It is not an unrestricted walk across the dam. The visit runs through identity checks, a controlled-zone transfer centre and sightseeing buses to fixed viewpoints.

The core attraction admission is free, but the internal shuttle is a separate required purchase. Reserve before travel and carry the same original passport used for registration. The official 2026 visitor notice says foreign travellers who cannot use the mainland-ID booking flow may register with a valid document at the on-site ticket window. Do not let a hotel or reseller persuade you that a paid “entrance ticket” is necessary.

Choose the visit you actually want

The standard route connects three named stops:

• Tanziling (坛子岭): the best first stop for the overall layout. Models and the elevated view help distinguish the dam, five-step ship locks and ship lift.
• 185 Platform (185平台): a closer, level-with-the-crest perspective. It communicates length and reservoir scale better than mechanical detail.
• Diversion Memorial Park (截流纪念园): the downstream face, construction objects and a more frontal view of the structure.

Most first-time visitors should keep all three if the shuttle route is operating normally. Allow about three to five hours from arrival at the transfer centre, not from the first viewpoint. Security, bus loading and holiday queues can consume a large part of that window.

The dam crest is not part of the ordinary tourist route. Water release, lock traffic and ship-lift movement are operational events, not scheduled shows. Haze, rain or low cloud can flatten the view, and no ticket guarantees a dramatic spillway scene.

Add the museum only if you want the explanation

The Three Gorges Project Museum is the useful add-on for engineering models, construction history and context that the outdoor viewpoints cannot provide. Its official site currently publishes 09:00–17:00, last entry 16:00, with Monday closure except public holidays. Visitors reach it by scenic-area transfer bus from the transfer centre; do not navigate directly to the building and assume public vehicle access.

Adding the museum turns the outing into a substantial half day. On a Monday, or if your interest is mainly the panorama, use the three-viewpoint loop instead.

Reservation, transport and security

Use the official Three Gorges Dam visitor channel linked by the Yichang government, and recheck the selected day's arrival window. Temporary holiday schedules can start earlier or divide visitors into morning and afternoon sessions.

Navigate to the Three Gorges Dam Tourist Area Visitor Transfer Centre (三峡大坝旅游区游客换乘中心). A private car does not replace the scenic bus. Drivers entering the controlled road network may also need a free vehicle permit; the 2026 operator notice required a driving licence, vehicle registration and electronic insurance proof. Treat that permit as road authorization, not permission to drive between tourist viewpoints.

Pack lightly. Security can restrict drones, hazardous items and other equipment; this is critical infrastructure. Keep the original passport accessible, allow buffer time before the booked session and follow photography signs rather than testing the boundary.

Do not confuse four different products

1. Ordinary dam visit: free core admission plus the required scenic shuttle.
2. Three Gorges Project Museum: a separate interpretive stop with its own weekly closure.
3. Two Dams One Gorge cruise: a paid Yichang river product that may include or connect with a dam visit; route, shore stops and transfers depend on the selected package.
4. Ship-lift or lock experience: a separate, variable sailing product. Seeing the ship lift from Tanziling is not the same as travelling through it.

Before buying a cruise or tour, require the seller to name the boarding pier, sailing direction, dam viewpoints included, internal shuttle, passport procedure, return transfer and weather or closure refund. Recent visitor reports about the wider cruise products repeatedly mention early assembly, waiting and paid seat upgrades. Other travellers prefer an independent dam visit because it makes the inclusions easier to understand. Neither format is automatically better; the useful question is whether you want river scenery bundled with the engineering stop.

Build the day from Yichang

Leave central Yichang early enough to complete registration before your arrival window. Do not attach a same-day long-distance train to the minimum published visit time. If the museum matters, avoid Monday and confirm that its bus connection is running.
