Hangzhou: plan four landscapes, not one giant lake loop
Hangzhou works best when you separate its travel jobs. West Lake is a designed cultural landscape; Lingyin and Longjing occupy the western hills; Xixi and the Grand Canal explain two different water systems; Liangzhu is a substantial archaeological excursion northwest of the compact core. A first trip becomes tiring when all four are treated as nearby pins.
The practical rule is simple: give each day one geographic direction, reserve the controlled entries first, then let flexible lake and street walks absorb weather or queue changes.
Choose the right route
- Choose 2 days for the strongest first-trip pair: West Lake and the southern museums on day one, Lingyin and tea country on day two.
- Choose 3 days to add Xixi Wetland and the Grand Canal as a deliberate contrast between ecology and working urban water.
- Choose 4 days if archaeology matters. Liangzhu deserves its own day and should not be squeezed between central-city attractions.
The map preserves relative position; straight colored lines indicate editorial sequence, not literal roads. Planning estimates put Xixi's Zhoujiacun entrance to Gongchen Bridge at about 12.6 km by car, while the Liangzhu archaeological park is roughly 21.7 km by road from Gongchen Bridge. Live traffic, park transport and current gates control the actual journey.
Book in this order
1. Lingyin–Feilai Peak
Hangzhou now uses a free official reservation for the Lingyin–Feilai Peak scenic area. The city government's current visitor notice directs visitors to the official 杭州灵隐飞来峰 mini-program in WeChat or Alipay and says reservations can open up to seven days ahead. Carry the original passport used in the booking and recheck holiday controls. Optional paid products on Trip.com's exact Lingyin listing do not replace the official admission rule.
2. Liangzhu Museum and Archaeological Park
These are two sites with different visit lengths and ticket conditions. The official Liangzhu visitor page is the authority for current museum reservations, park admission, opening days and visitor caps. Reserve both parts deliberately; a museum confirmation is not a park ticket.
3. Xixi boats and other optional products
Xixi has multiple entrances, walking zones and boat products. Decide the exact entrance and route before paying. Use Trip.com's current Xixi listing only to compare live product details, then follow the park's official gate map and same-day weather controls.
4. West Lake boats
Walking the lakeshore is free; boats are optional and weather-sensitive. Hangzhou's 2026 official boat-route notice gives the current operating framework but also makes clear that flow and weather can change service. Never build the whole day around an old pier screenshot.

Do not try to complete every named scene in one circuit. For a first visit, start at Broken Bridge, cross Bai Causeway to Solitary Hill, then continue by the section that matches your energy. The south shore works well with Flower Harbor and the China National Silk Museum. A boat is useful only when it replaces a walk or creates a distinct water-level perspective.

Make Lingyin and tea one western-hills day
Lingyin to the China National Tea Museum is about 4.1 km by road in route planning; the museum to Longjing Village is about 3.2 km. That is a coherent west-Hangzhou day. Walking the whole connection is possible in parts, but roadside sections, gradients and weather make a taxi or ride-hail the better default between major nodes.
Visit Lingyin and Feilai Peak before the museum, then use the Longjing tea route to understand tea before entering a sales conversation.
Use the third day for two kinds of water
At Xixi Wetland, choose ecology and slow movement. At the Grand Canal, Gongchen Bridge and Xiaohe, look for trade, industry, domestic water access and adaptive reuse. The contrast is more useful than adding a second generic old street.
Add Liangzhu only with enough time
The museum explains the evidence; the park supplies scale. See them in that order. The museum's jades, chronology and social organization make the palace platform, walls and hydraulic system legible when you reach the outdoor site. Allow roughly two hours for the museum and three to three-and-a-half for the park, plus transfer and document checks.
What to eat—and how to choose
Hangzhou cuisine
The city's famous dishes can be delicate, sweet-leaning and easily flattened by banquet-style reheating. For West Lake vinegar fish, ask which fish is used and expect a soft texture; it is a historical reference dish, not a universal crowd-pleaser. Dongpo pork should be rich but not dry. Order it as a shared dish rather than an individual challenge.
Noodles and breakfast
Pian'er chuan combines noodles with preserved vegetables, bamboo shoots and pork. Choose a shop cooking bowls to order with visible turnover. Congbaohui—fried spring onion and dough pressed in a wrapper—is best eaten immediately from a focused stall, not kept as a souvenir snack.
Tea buying
Never buy Longjing solely because a host says it is “West Lake core production.” Ask for origin area, cultivar, harvest period, grade, net weight and total price before tasting. Compare dry leaf and brewed leaf, and buy a small sealed quantity first. A scenic address and a formal ceremony are not independent proof of provenance.
Where to stay
- Hubin or Longxiangqiao: best for a short first trip, lake access and evening convenience. Check whether the hotel is genuinely walkable from the lake rather than using “West Lake” broadly in its name.
- Wulin Square: best transport-balanced base for longer stays, restaurants and north-city access. It is less atmospheric at the door but reduces several cross-city transfers.
- Huanglong or western lake edge: useful for Lingyin, Xixi and the tea hills, but slower for Hangzhou East station and the Grand Canal.
- Hangzhou East station: use only for a late arrival or early train constraint. It is not the best sightseeing base for a multi-day visit.

Arrival and movement rules
- From Shanghai, high-speed rail is usually more useful than flying. Compare current train schedules on Trip.com, then verify the arrival station; Hangzhou East and Hangzhou West serve different travel directions.
- Use exact Chinese entrances. 西溪国家湿地公园周家村入口 is more operational than a generic “Xixi Wetland” pin.
- Use metro for broad city corridors, taxi or ride-hail for the western hills and Liangzhu connections, and current scenic transport inside large parks.
- Add time for passport checks, reservation gates and weekend road controls. A ten-minute driving estimate is not a ten-minute door-to-door transfer.
- Spring rain, summer heat and typhoon-season weather can change boats, exposed walks and outdoor archaeology. Keep one indoor museum as the day’s compression point.
