Southern Song Imperial Street to Hefang: read the old city before shopping
These adjacent streets are often reduced to one souvenir district. A better visit starts on Southern Song Imperial Street (南宋御街), where the former capital axis and archaeological traces frame the walk, then turns into Hefang Street (河坊街) for commerce, food and evening activity.
The present streetscape mixes preserved fabric, archaeological display, later restoration, ordinary business and visitor-oriented reconstruction. That mixture is the subject; do not pretend every facade survives unchanged from the Southern Song.
A 90-minute route
- Begin on the southern or central section of Southern Song Imperial Street and move north.
- Pause at exposed or interpreted road remains where available; read the signs before the shopfronts erase the older axis.
- Notice lane width, water management, building setbacks and the transition from quieter blocks to commercial concentration.
- Turn into Hefang for one food stop and one deliberate shop category.
- Leave through a named metro or taxi pickup point rather than wandering until every shop repeats.

What is historical—and what is curated
Hangzhou was the Southern Song capital, but a capital street changed over centuries. Archaeological remains and street alignment provide one kind of evidence; reconstructed facades and themed retail provide another. Ask what a feature is based on rather than using age as a vague atmosphere label.

Food: sample, then eat properly
Use Hefang for one or two snacks, not proof that the busiest street has the city's best cooking. Choose stalls preparing food in view with clear prices and active turnover. Eat congbaohui immediately; compare a small pastry portion before buying a gift box. For a proper Hangzhou meal, walk a few blocks away from the densest tourist frontage and choose a focused kitchen.
If ordering famous dishes, share them. West Lake vinegar fish has a soft texture and sweet-sour profile that not every traveler enjoys; it should not consume the meal budget simply because it appears on every list.
Tea, medicine and craft shopping

- Tea: ask origin, cultivar, harvest period, grade, weight and total price before tasting. A “Longjing” sign does not establish provenance.
- Traditional medicine: distinguish a historic pharmacy display from individualized medical advice. Do not buy ingestible products because a salesperson makes a diagnosis in a tourist street.
- Silk: check fibre composition, construction and care label. “Silk-like” appearance is not material proof.
- Crafts: ask who made the object and what process was used. A demonstration can be informative, but it can also be sales theatre.
Best time
Late afternoon works well: archaeological and architectural details remain visible, then evening lights support a short food stop. At night alone, the street becomes visually attractive but harder to read critically. Weekends and holidays are crowded; begin on the Imperial Street side before entering Hefang's busiest blocks.
Pair it well
This walk fits after the China National Silk Museum, roughly 3.5 km away by road in planning. It also works after a shorter West Lake day. Do not cross the city from Xixi solely for an evening snack if the Grand Canal is already on that route.
Common mistakes
- Calling the entire district an untouched Song-dynasty street.
- Buying tea before agreeing on weight and total price.
- Mistaking a crowded snack queue for a quality guarantee.
- Photographing shop workers or performers closely without consent.
- Continuing past the point where the shops repeat instead of ending the route deliberately.
The right outcome is not a full shopping bag. It is a readable transition from former capital axis to modern heritage commerce, plus one food or craft choice you can explain.
