Trains and Getting Around China

China's transport network is straightforward once your identity, payment and navigation tools are ready. The problems most often reported by international visitors happen before the journey: an unverified 12306 account, a name that does not match the passport, or arriving at the wrong station in a city with several major terminals.

Set Up Train Booking Before Tickets Open

China Railway's official 12306 English website and app accept foreign passports. Create the passenger profile using the name, nationality, passport number and date of birth exactly as shown on the passport. The system may verify the passport automatically or request an upload of the information page for manual review.

Do this before a popular route goes on sale. Release windows and inventory can change, and waiting until travel day leaves little room to correct an identity-verification problem.

You have two practical booking paths:

  • 12306: the official source for schedules, ticket changes and railway rules.
  • Trip.com: an English-language alternative when you prefer international-card support and a more familiar booking flow. You can compare China train tickets on Trip.com.

Whichever channel you use, check the passenger name, passport number, travel date, departure station and arrival station before paying.

Do Not Confuse Stations in the Same City

Large cities may have several stations whose English names look similar: for example, a central station, North, South, East or West. Save the full Chinese station name in your map app and navigate to the exact terminal shown on the ticket.

For a first high-speed rail journey, leave a generous station buffer. Recent visitor reports commonly recommend arriving 30–60 minutes early because major terminals involve security screening, long walks and separate waiting areas. Add more time during national holidays, at very large stations or when traveling with children or heavy luggage.

Entering the Station and Boarding

Bring the original passport used to buy the ticket. Foreign travelers can normally use that document for ticket verification and boarding. If an automatic gate does not read it, use the staffed or manual inspection lane; a gate failure does not by itself mean that the ticket is invalid.

Inside the station:

  1. Match your train number and departure time to the correct waiting area.
  2. Watch the screens for the platform and boarding-gate announcement.
  3. Join the queue when checking begins; gates close before the train departs.
  4. Confirm the carriage and seat printed in the booking.

Keep liquids, batteries and restricted items accessible for screening. Baggage rules depend on the service and item, so check current 12306 guidance rather than relying on an old packing chart.

Metro and Bus Travel

Most city metros offer single-journey tickets from machines or service counters. Some systems accept international cards, but support is not uniform. A reliable fallback is a small amount of RMB cash.

Alipay's Transport section can create a city-specific metro or bus QR code after identity verification. Switching cities may require activating a new local transport card inside the app. Do not assume one city's QR code works nationwide.

For route planning, use Amap or another China-ready navigation app. Save both the English and Chinese names of your destination, especially for a hotel, railway station or attraction entrance.

Ride-Hailing Without Pickup Confusion

DiDi supports overseas phone numbers and international cards, and it can also be opened through Alipay. Pin the pickup point carefully: railway stations, airports and malls often have multiple ride-hailing zones on different floors.

Before entering a car, match the vehicle plate and model shown in the app. Keep the destination in Chinese on screen, and use in-app messaging or translation when the driver cannot call an overseas number.

A Resilient Transport Setup

Before your first travel day, prepare all four layers:

  • original passport and confirmed booking;
  • 12306 or Trip.com for intercity tickets;
  • Amap for the exact station and entrance;
  • Alipay, DiDi and some RMB cash for local transport.

This setup is more useful than installing many overlapping apps. It also gives you a fallback when an automated gate, QR code or international card does not work as expected.
