Hunan

The strongest first route moves west from Changsha through Xiangxi to Zhangjiajie. Rail makes Fenghuang and Furong easier to combine than before, but the mountain parks still require full days and different hotel bases. Yueyang and Hengyang belong to separate northern and southern extensions.

Choose your region

• Classic first route: Changsha–Fenghuang–Furong–Zhangjiajie in 7–9 days.
• Xiangxi road loop: Jishou, Aizhai, Dehang and Qianzhou for gorge scenery and local history; allow 3–4 days.
• Northern extension: Yueyang for Dongting Lake and Yueyang Tower, best linked with Wuhan or Changsha.
• Southern extension: Hengyang for Mount Heng, with a flexible mountain day.

How many days

Three days suit Changsha alone or a compact Zhangjiajie visit. Seven days allow two nights in Changsha, one in Fenghuang, and three around Zhangjiajie, with Furong as a stop or overnight. Add another day if you want two full National Forest Park routes plus Tianmen Mountain.

Cities and bases

Changsha needs a central metro base for the museum, Yuelu and the old city. In Xiangxi, choose Fenghuang for the Tuo River town, Furong for a waterfall-town stop, or Jishou for Aizhai and Dehang; they are not interchangeable. At Zhangjiajie, stay in Wulingyuan for the National Forest Park and near the city cableway for Tianmen Mountain. One hotel creates repeated long transfers.

Routes through the province

Eight-day first route

1. Arrive in Changsha and explore one old-city food area.
2. Reserve Hunan Museum, then pair Yuelu Academy with the west bank.
3. Travel to Fenghuang and keep the riverfront for late afternoon and evening.
4. See Fenghuang in daylight, then stop in Furong or continue to Wulingyuan.
5. Use the National Forest Park's correct gate for a full mountain route.
6. Enter a different gate or choose a second park sector without repeating the same lifts.
7. Move to Zhangjiajie city and visit Tianmen Mountain on its own ticketed route.
8. Depart with margin for mountain weather and cableway queues.

Do not treat every illuminated old town as a separate full experience. One evening in Fenghuang and one contrasting daytime stop usually create a stronger trip than chasing three similar night views.

When to visit

Spring and autumn offer comfortable city walking and atmospheric mountain conditions, though rain and fog can hide viewpoints. Summer is green, hot and busy; thunderstorms affect lifts and exposed paths. Winter can bring snow and ice, with partial closures. A foggy morning may clear, but never rely on that for a same-day train connection.

Getting there and around

Changsha is the main air and rail gateway. Fast rail connects Changsha, Fenghuang, Furong and Zhangjiajie, but each station needs a final bus or taxi. Check whether your ticket and hotel refer to Zhangjiajie city or Wulingyuan. Road transport remains useful for Aizhai, Dehang and smaller Xiangxi stops.

Where to stay

Use at least two nights in Wulingyuan for the forest park and a separate city night for Tianmen Mountain. Stay near an accessible edge in Fenghuang if carrying luggage; stone streets and stairs can separate the vehicle drop-off from the hotel. In Changsha, metro access matters more than proximity to one snack street.

What to book first

Reserve Hunan Museum, Zhangjiajie park entry and lifts, Tianmen Mountain's route product, holiday trains and mountain hotels first. Recheck gate, cableway and weather notices shortly before each mountain day.
