China festivals and events calendar 2027
The useful 2027 China calendar has two layers. The festival day may already be fixed by law or by the lunar calendar, while the actual days off, adjusted working weekends, venue program and ticket release may still be unannounced. Mixing those layers is how a correct date such as Lunar New Year Day becomes an incorrect claim about a nine-day holiday.
For international travelers, the biggest decisions are therefore not “Which festivals exist?” but which dates are confirmed, which crowds will affect an ordinary trip, and what can safely be booked before the detailed notice appears. This guide answers those questions month by month. It includes national holidays, traditional festivals, destination events, major races and business fairs because all five can change train availability, hotel prices or local access in different ways.
The mainland 2027 public-holiday arrangement has not been announced. That means the continuous break around each statutory holiday and every adjusted working Saturday or Sunday remain unknown. The confirmed dates in this guide come from the statutory-holiday regulation, the official 2027 Gregorian–lunar conversion, or an event organizer that has already published its 2027 calendar. For the final days-off notice when it appears, use our China public-holiday page.
The dates you can plan around now
| Date | What is confirmed | What is still unannounced | Travel consequence |
|---|---|---|---|
| January 1 | New Year's Day is a statutory holiday date | The continuous 2027 break and adjusted workday | Mild nationwide pressure; city countdown programs are venue-specific |
| February 6 | Lunar New Year Day | The mainland Spring Festival break, work weekends, temple fairs and lantern programs | The year's most important transport and family-travel period |
| February 20 | Lantern Festival | Individual lantern-fair dates, tickets and crowd controls | Worth adding to a city already on the route; wait before building a trip around one venue |
| April 5 | Qingming day | The exact official break | Family travel and cemetery traffic can affect roads and stations |
| April 16–18 | Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai | Detailed timetable and any remaining ticket releases | Jiading and parts of Shanghai face race-weekend hotel and transport pressure |
| April 17 | Formula E Sanya E-Prix | Detailed timetable and ticket release | A confirmed sports weekend in Sanya; it overlaps the Shanghai F1 weekend |
| May 1–2 | Labour Day statutory days | The full break and adjusted workdays | Likely one of the year's broadest leisure-travel peaks; do not guess its length |
| June 9 | Dragon Boat Festival | The official break and each local race program | Riverside controls and local viewing rules matter more than the national date alone |
| July 10–11 | Formula E Shanghai E-Prix | Detailed timetable and ticket release | A second confirmed motorsport weekend at Shanghai International Circuit |
| September 15 | Mid-Autumn Festival | The official break and city programs | Evening demand rises around scenic waterfronts and historic districts |
| October 1–3 | National Day statutory days | The complete National Day break and adjusted workdays | Expect the year's other major nationwide travel wave |
| During 2027 | A 10th China International Import Expo is planned for Shanghai | Exact dates, registration and access | Business-hotel pressure will matter once dates are published; it is not a leisure festival |
A statutory date is not the same as a tourist event. Labour Day can affect almost every popular destination even without a parade. Lantern Festival can produce a spectacular local program without creating a national day off. The Canton Fair can fill hotels around Pazhou while most leisure visitors never enter the exhibition halls.

How to use an incomplete event calendar
Use a three-step booking sequence rather than waiting for every detail or paying for everything too early.
- Protect the immovable international legs. If your trip must include the confirmed Shanghai F1 weekend, secure a changeable Shanghai hotel and sensible inbound transport. If the trip merely might include a local lantern fair, keep the city choice flexible.
- Wait for the correct authority. The State Council controls the mainland holiday arrangement. A city or venue controls its festival program. A sports organizer controls ticket release. Last year's date or a viral calendar graphic controls none of them.
- Buy domestic transport in its real release window. China Railway currently sells most tickets 15 days in advance, including the departure date, and can adjust the window after notice. Use the official 12306 ticket platform or a clearly identified booking channel, set a reminder for the correct release time, and keep a route B when a peak train sells out.
For a still-unannounced event, a flexible room is reasonable only when the city itself is worth visiting without the event. A non-refundable flight to a lantern festival, flower festival or winter park with no official operating dates is a wager rather than a plan.
January: winter attractions, not a guaranteed festival opening
Confirmed: January 1 is New Year's Day. Unannounced: the continuous 2027 mainland break, adjusted workday, city countdowns and the exact operating window for Harbin's 2026–27 outdoor Ice and Snow World.
January is the strongest month for a dedicated Harbin winter trip after the outdoor attractions have officially opened. Ice and Snow World, the Sun Island Snow Sculpture Expo and city-center Harbin are separate experiences with separate gates and operational risks. The ice park is rebuilt each season, so a photograph or ticket from last winter cannot confirm the next layout, rides or opening day. Use the Harbin winter planning guide to distinguish the products before booking.
Worth a special trip? Yes, if the outdoor edition is confirmed for your dates and extreme cold is part of the appeal. No, if a giant illuminated ice park is the only acceptable result and its opening is still unannounced.
Lower-risk alternative: Base the trip on Central Street, Saint Sophia, museums and food, then add the ice park only after the operator confirms it. For a milder winter without seasonal construction risk, choose a cultural city through the winter destination chooser.
February: Spring Festival and Lantern Festival
Confirmed: Lunar New Year Day falls on February 6; Lantern Festival falls on February 20. Unannounced: the Spring Festival days-off block, adjusted work weekends, individual temple fairs, lantern fairs, ticket rules and road controls.
Spring Festival is the most consequential family-migration period in the calendar. The difficult part is not every city being “closed.” It is the combination of heavy intercity demand, different business hours, family-oriented local travel and venue reservations. Large transport hubs and famous attractions can be busy while some independent restaurants and shops shorten hours early in the festival.
Plan meals and transport as carefully as attractions. Reserve timed major sights through their official systems, keep your first evening simple, and save the hotel name and address in Chinese. Do not assume a train will be available because sales have not opened yet; set the 12306 reminder and hold a flight or slower-train alternative where the route is critical.
Lantern Festival is better treated as a city-specific evening layer. Beijing temple fairs, Shanghai's Yu Garden area, Zigong's large lantern installations and other city programs are not interchangeable, and none has earned a 2027 date simply by operating before. Wait for the exact venue notice, entry method, last-entry time and metro or road control. If a short video is the only proof that a program exists, do not make it the reason for an international flight.
Worth a special trip? Spring Festival can justify a culture-focused trip for a traveler comfortable with crowds and partial closures. A local lantern program justifies a special trip only after its edition, dates and access rules are official.
Lower-friction alternative: Visit in early March for normal city operations and spring weather without the nationwide family-travel peak.
March: the practical gap month
March has no confirmed nationwide statutory holiday in this calendar. That makes it valuable rather than empty. It is often easier to build a Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an or southern-China city route when no national break controls the entire transport system.
Flower displays, marathons, exhibitions and neighborhood events will appear, but they are local programs. A citywide “March events” list can become stale within days; use it to discover possibilities, then confirm the organizer, exact entrance, booking method and cancellation rule.
Worth a special trip? Usually for the city, weather and route rather than one event. March is a strong choice for travelers who want everyday museums, food districts and historic areas to remain the core experience.
Booking posture: Domestic trains still deserve early action on the current release day, but there is no reason to price March like National Day. Compare several weekdays before paying a premium.
April: Qingming, Shanghai F1 and Sanya Formula E
Confirmed: Qingming falls on April 5. The Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix runs April 16–18 at Shanghai International Circuit. Formula E races in Sanya on April 17 at Haitang Bay Circuit. Unannounced: the Qingming break, race-day timetables and remaining ticket inventory, plus the 2027 Luoyang Peony Culture Festival program.
Qingming is a remembrance festival as well as a public holiday. Family journeys, cemetery access and short leisure trips can raise demand even when a visitor is not attending a public event. Avoid a tight road transfer through a large city on the presumed edge of the holiday until the official break is known.
The two confirmed race programs create a real choice. A motorsport fan can plan Shanghai around F1 or Sanya around Formula E, but cannot realistically attend both on April 17. Shanghai is the stronger all-weather city base and can support a full first-time visit around the circuit weekend. Sanya suits a resort-and-race trip, but circuit transport should be confirmed before choosing a remote beach hotel.
For F1, treat Jiading circuit access as a separate day system. Do not stack a museum reservation in central Shanghai immediately before a session. Allow for station queues, security and the long dispersal after racing. Buy only through the event's official ticket flow or an authorized seller; a social-media promise of “guaranteed grandstand access” is not inventory.
Luoyang's peony season attracts attention in April, but flowers respond to weather and gardens manage different varieties. The festival name, bloom condition and individual garden ticket are three separate facts. Keep the Luoyang trip valuable through grottoes, old-city history and museums, then choose the best current garden after the city publishes its 2027 program.
May: Labour Day and the spring Canton Fair
Confirmed: May 1 and 2 are statutory Labour Day dates under the current national regulation. Unannounced: the full break, adjusted working days and the phase dates for the 141st spring Canton Fair.
Labour Day is a peak to take seriously even before its final shape is published. It affects classic scenic areas, theme parks, city museums and short-haul rail routes simultaneously. If you must travel then, reduce the number of city changes. Three nights in one base with two timed attractions is more robust than moving hotels every night while competing for trains.
Choose accommodations for the actual day plan. A hotel near a morning attraction can be worth more than one near the airport when the attraction has timed entry and the roads are crowded. Build food flexibility into the route: reserve one important meal, but keep nearby walk-in options in case a sightseeing queue overruns.
The Canton Fair is a business event, not a tourist attraction. Its spring phases can create strong hotel demand around Pazhou and business-oriented transport flows in Guangzhou, but the 2027 phase dates should not be copied from 2026 or from the fair's usual pattern. Buyers should verify the official fair platform, badge requirements and product phase before selecting flights. Leisure travelers who find Pazhou expensive can stay on a metro line useful for their own route instead of paying for exhibition proximity.
Once an edition is confirmed, the Canton Fair first-time visitor guide gives buyers the phase, badge, venue, quotation and supplier follow-up workflow. Future-edition dates remain unannounced until the fair publishes them.
Worth a special trip? Labour Day itself rarely improves a first visit. The Canton Fair is worth a special trip for a qualified buyer with the correct phase, not as general sightseeing.
June: Dragon Boat Festival
Confirmed: Dragon Boat Festival falls on June 9. Unannounced: the official break and every local race schedule, viewing zone, reservation rule and waterway closure.
Dragon-boat racing is local. A festival date does not guarantee a race at the riverside closest to your hotel, and a city can host several community, district and commercial programs with different access. Guangzhou and the Pearl River Delta, Hangzhou-area communities and many other southern and eastern destinations have deep traditions, but only the current local notice can establish where a visitor may watch in 2027.
Choose a race only after checking four details: the exact Chinese venue, start window, whether spectators need a reservation, and how the waterfront disperses afterward. Arrive early enough to find the marked public viewing area; do not stand on a working village landing or block team access for a photograph. Keep a rain and heat plan because early-summer humidity can make a long exposed wait harder than the race itself.

Worth a special trip? Yes when a verified community or city race is central to your interests and you can accept weather changes. Otherwise, add it to a city route rather than making the whole international journey depend on a short race window.
Alternative: Use the day to understand local food and river culture, then visit a confirmed race only if the venue notice fits your route.
July: Formula E Shanghai and summer event season
Confirmed: Formula E races at Shanghai International Circuit on July 10 and 11. Unannounced: the detailed timetable, ticket release, Qingdao International Beer Festival dates and venues, and most city summer-festival programs.
The Shanghai E-Prix is the calendar's second confirmed Shanghai circuit weekend. It suits a traveler who wants motorsport but cannot attend April's F1 dates. The same transport rule applies: treat Jiading as the day's anchor, leave central sightseeing for another day, and protect the return after the final session.
Qingdao's beer festival is a large summer city event whose venues and traffic controls matter. In 2026, the city announced that edition only in late June and issued event-specific road restrictions. That is useful evidence about how late operational information can arrive, not a basis for assigning the same dates to 2027. Until Qingdao publishes the new edition, book only if the coast, old town, museums and food already justify the trip.
Worth a special trip? Formula E can be, once tickets and session details match your interests. Qingdao's festival can be, after its exact edition and venue mix are confirmed. A generic “summer festival” list is not enough.
August: broad summer pressure without one national date
August has no confirmed nationwide statutory holiday in this calendar, yet it can be busy because school vacations, heat escapes, family travel and city events overlap. There is no single national school-holiday timetable to quote for every province, so plan from the destination rather than assuming one start or end date.
Mountain and northern destinations can face strong leisure demand while hot lowland cities move activity into mornings, evenings and air-conditioned interiors. The cool-summer destination guide helps choose by climate, altitude and transport risk rather than chasing an unverified event.
If Qingdao's beer festival continues into August, the official 2027 notice will say so. Do not infer an August closing date from a previous edition. In coastal cities, weather and sea conditions can also disrupt outdoor programs independently of the event calendar.
Best strategy: Stay longer in fewer bases, use timed indoor anchors through the hottest part of the day, and keep a flexible outdoor evening. August is a month when ordinary travel pressure can matter more than a headline festival.
September: Mid-Autumn Festival and local city programs
Confirmed: Mid-Autumn Festival falls on September 15. Unannounced: the official break, city lantern programs, waterfront controls and the 2027 Shanghai Tourism Festival schedule.
Mid-Autumn is associated with family gatherings, mooncakes and evening moon-viewing, but a traveler should not expect one nationwide public performance. The most useful experience may be a normal evening in a historic district, park or waterfront area where local families gather. Famous promenades can become crowded, so identify a parallel street and the final metro time before settling into one viewpoint.
Shanghai's Tourism Festival often adds parades, neighborhood events and discounts, but its 2027 program must come from the city's current announcement. Do not delay an entire Shanghai route waiting for it. The city's museums, riverfronts and neighborhoods are already sufficient reasons to travel.
Worth a special trip? Mid-Autumn is strongest as a cultural layer within a longer China visit. Travel specifically for a named city program only when the program, access and weather contingency are published.
October: National Day and the autumn Canton Fair
Confirmed: October 1–3 are statutory National Day dates. Unannounced: the complete continuous break, adjusted working weekends and the phase dates for the 142nd autumn Canton Fair.
National Day is the other major nationwide pressure period. The common mistake is to design a fast multicity route because the holiday looks long on an unofficial graphic. Until the State Council publishes the arrangement, no one knows the correct adjusted weekends or the precise travel-wave edges.
If October travel is unavoidable, make one high-demand booking per day and keep the rest local. A reservation at the Forbidden City plus a same-day train to another city leaves no recovery if security or crowds delay you. A Shanghai museum morning, neighborhood afternoon and evening near the hotel is more resilient.
For business travelers, the autumn Canton Fair creates the same phase problem as spring: a buyer of electronics, textiles and food products needs the correct phase, not merely “October in Guangzhou.” Wait for the official 142nd-session dates and registration flow. Leisure visitors can route around Pazhou and still enjoy the city.
Worth a special trip? National Day celebrations may interest a repeat traveler, but the crowd cost is high. Most first-time visitors get a calmer, more flexible trip by shifting into late October after the official break.
November: the 10th CIIE and post-holiday city travel
A 10th China International Import Expo is planned for Shanghai in 2027. Its exact date, registration and visitor-access rules are unannounced. Do not automatically assign the 2026 dates to the next edition.
CIIE is a trade platform at the National Exhibition and Convention Center near Hongqiao, not an open city festival. Once the dates are official, business hotel demand around Hongqiao and the exhibition center may rise. An exhibitor or professional visitor should confirm invitation, badge, security and access rules before buying the trip. A leisure traveler does not need to attend and can choose a different Shanghai district or different week.
November otherwise offers a useful post–National Day planning window. Northern cities become cold, eastern cities move into late autumn and the south remains comfortable in many weeks. Build the trip around weather and destination fit; add exhibitions only when a live official page provides a concrete booking or access job.
December: winter openings and city countdowns
Unannounced: the 2027–28 Harbin Ice and Snow World opening, winter attraction tickets, city New Year's Eve programs and most countdown access controls.
December is the month most vulnerable to premature festival marketing. Harbin's ice construction depends on sustained cold, engineering and safety checks. A target opening from an old article is not a confirmed date. Keep any early-December Harbin trip changeable until the outdoor operator confirms that edition; indoor attractions carrying a similar brand name are not proof that the giant outdoor park is open.

A previous Harbin winter edition shows the scale of the outdoor site, not the 2027–28 opening date, layout or ticket conditions. Photo by Garosio33, CC0; cropped for composition.
New Year's Eve programming is also venue-specific. Riverfronts, shopping districts and theme parks may require reservations or use temporary crowd controls. Confirm the exact entrance, last metro, road closures and whether the “countdown” is an official program rather than an informal gathering.
Worth a special trip? A confirmed Harbin edition can be. A generic city countdown rarely justifies choosing the entire China itinerary around December 31.
Which events justify choosing the trip dates?
Strong date anchors: Shanghai F1, the Sanya or Shanghai Formula E rounds, and a confirmed major winter or lantern attraction when that specific experience is the goal. These have a clear venue and can change the destination decision.
Good additions to an existing route: Lantern Festival, a verified dragon-boat race, Mid-Autumn evening programs, a peony garden at current bloom, or a city tourism festival. They improve a route that already works but should not carry a fragile itinerary alone.
Travel-impact events rather than leisure targets: the Canton Fair and CIIE. They matter because of hotel pressure, badges and transport patterns. Unless you are attending professionally, route around them.
Dates many first-time visitors should avoid when flexible: the final Spring Festival, Labour Day and National Day breaks. The festivals are culturally important, but nationwide transport pressure and attraction crowds reduce the number of things a first-time visitor can execute smoothly.
Final verification checklist before paying
- Check the official mainland holiday notice through our holiday page; do not use a prediction graphic for adjusted workdays.
- Match the event's Chinese and English name, edition, year, city and venue.
- Confirm whether the source announces a festival day, an event program, a ticket sale or only a planning intention.
- Use the official organizer or authorized ticket seller; never send passport images to an informal social-media seller.
- For rail, recheck the current 12306 sales window and exact station. Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou each have multiple major stations.
- Keep the first and last domestic connection movable during a national travel peak.
- Save the hotel address, venue entrance and return plan in Chinese before entering a crowded program.
- Recheck weather, road or metro controls on the event day. A confirmed date does not guarantee every outdoor session.
- Preserve a city-level fallback. If the local program is cancelled, postponed or never announced, the destination should still earn its place in the itinerary.
The safest 2027 plan is not the one with the most events. It is the one that knows which date is a fact, which detail is still unannounced, and which ordinary day in China would still be worth the journey.
