Kashgar Old City: choose the experience before the route

Kashgar Old City is a protected district and a living home, divided into east and west by a major road. Recent visitors consistently describe the east as busier and more performance- and commerce-led, while the west can feel quieter but still contains travel-photo lanes and private thresholds.

East, west or both?

Choose the east side for public activity, shops and separately announced cultural programming. Accept more queues and repetition, and leave when a ceremony or photo crowd blocks ordinary movement.

Choose the west side for a slower architecture and residential-edge walk. Quieter does not mean public: doors, courtyards, roofs and homes remain private unless clearly opened by a verified operator or resident invitation.

AMap verifies Old City, Id Kah and Gaotai as distinct anchors: Old City to Id Kah is about 0.3 km / 4 minutes on foot, while Gaotai is about 0.5 km / 7 minutes away but remains labelled temporarily closed. Use the current signed crossing and do not convert a social-media photograph into navigation.

Unbundle every paid experience

Public lanes, an opening ceremony, a house visit, craft workshop, stage performance, makeup, costume hire, photography and retouched files are different products. Before paying, confirm the operator, exact inclusions, total price, delivery format, delivery time, cancellation and consent for image use.

Do not assume that “makeup” includes a costume or photographer. Do not assume a house ticket grants access to residential rooms. The official 2025 protection baseline describes a 1.57-square-kilometre district with roughly 62,000 residents; tourism and everyday life occupy the same streets.

This photograph shows one public-facing lane. It does not establish that any doorway, home or route remains open today.

Protect privacy and stamina

Ask before photographing identifiable people, especially children, artisans at close range or anyone inside a home. Do not pose in an active doorway, film through windows or treat residents as scenery. A shop invitation is not permission to publish a worker's portrait.

Summer heat, dust or poor air can make a two-side route unreasonable. Use a midday indoor break, carry water and choose fewer lanes rather than racing to recreate a viral map. Toilets, step-free paths, entrances and the east-west crossing still need live verification.

Pairing decision

Pair a bounded Old City walk with the exterior of Id Kah Mosque only when worship boundaries and the route are clear. Do not add the Sunday livestock market as a quick extension: it is a separate outskirts trip with different conduct, clothing and transport needs.

Final verdict

The best first visit is not the longest. Choose east, west or a verified combination, separate every paid product, and behave as a guest in a neighbourhood where tourism never cancels residential privacy.
