Shanghai Science and Technology Museum

Shanghai Science and Technology Museum (上海科技馆, Shànghǎi Kējìguǎn) formally reopened in June 2026 after a long renovation and trial period. It is a hands-on family museum built around interaction, demonstrations, films, and refreshed science galleries. Old pre-renovation “must-see” lists are now less useful than the museum's current map and timed-program schedule.

Choose It for Participation

This museum suits children who learn by touching, testing, and watching. Choose Natural History Museum for animals and fossils, Astronomy Museum for a space-focused full day, or Shanghai Museum for historical objects and art. Adults without children should check the current exhibitions before assuming the permanent hands-on experience fits them.

Allow 3–5 hours. Younger children may be finished after three; older children can use most of a day if timed activities align.

Reserve Entry, Then Choose Three Priorities

Book real-name admission through official channels and bring the same passport. The current regular schedule is Tuesday–Sunday, 9:00 am–5:00 pm, with last entry at 4:00 pm and Monday closure except for holiday changes.

Films, laboratories, and some interactive programs have separate prices or reservations. Admission therefore does not guarantee every experience shown online. Open the current map before arrival and let the family choose three priority zones. Book at most one major film or timed program until you understand the day's walking and queue load.

A Route That Survives Reopening Crowds

At entry, go first to the most interactive priority, then one calmer gallery, then take a real break. Use the third priority after lunch and fill gaps with nearby exhibits instead of crossing the entire building for every short queue. Do not reserve back-to-back films: exit procedures and movement between halls consume time.

Treat a temporarily closed exhibit as normal operational reality, not a reason to rebuild the whole day. The renovated museum is still a better experience when the family leaves with energy than when every room has been checked.

Getting There and Finishing Well

The museum is at 2000 Century Avenue above Shanghai Science and Technology Museum Station on Line 2. The underground market nearby is a separate shopping area and should not compete with a timed entry.

Finish in Century Park when the weather is comfortable. Shanghai Museum East is nearby, but two large museums work only for focused adults. Families should choose one museum and end outdoors.
