Nanjing Road Shanghai
Nanjing Road is a long commercial axis, but the famous pedestrian street is East Nanjing Road (南京东路, Nánjīng Dōnglù) between People's Square and the Bund. West Nanjing Road around Jing'an is a different luxury and office district. For a first visit, follow the eastern section in one direction and finish at the river.
Allow 60–90 minutes for a continuous walk or 2–3 hours with one department store, one traditional shop and a meal. The street itself is public and always accessible; individual businesses keep their own hours.
A no-backtracking first visit
- Start at People's Square. Use the square-side end to understand how the street grew beside Shanghai's former racecourse and department-store district.
- Choose one historic retail building. The former “Four Great Chinese Department Stores” introduced modern window displays, lifts and leisure shopping. Look at façades and vertical signs before deciding whether to enter one current mall.
- Continue along the pedestrian spine. Compare old food, medicine, jewellery and craft brands with current fashion, technology and designer-toy stores. Ten focused minutes in one shop reveal more than a race through every flagship.
- Pause around Century Square. Treat pop-ups and performances as optional current programming, not permanent attractions.
- Walk the eastern extension to the Bund. The pedestrian connection now reaches the historic waterfront. Finish with the Bund architecture walk, or stop at the central promenade if the group has already walked enough.
This route is roughly 1.5 kilometres before any store detours. The little sightseeing tram can reduce walking when operating, but it is a ride within the commercial street rather than an essential heritage experience.
What is worth shopping for?
Choose a purpose before entering stores:
- Food gifts: check production date, storage needs and whether the item will survive your onward travel.
- Craft or jewellery: compare material, maker, hallmark and return policy. A “traditional” sign does not prove local production.
- Fashion and toys: use official brand stores for limited products, but compare mainland pricing and tax-refund eligibility before assuming a bargain.
- Architecture and street life: spend nothing. The strongest layer is the change from historic department stores to LED façades and the eventual opening toward the Bund.
Keep receipts and photograph the shop name for returns. Ignore invitations to private “tea tastings,” art rooms or bargain markets that begin with an unsolicited approach on the street.
Food without chasing a viral queue
East Nanjing Road has long-established pastry, rice-cake, noodle and snack businesses, alongside chains and mall dining. Select by the visible product, turnover, portion and total price. Fresh-meat mooncakes, qingtuan and other seasonal items are not equally available year-round.
For a proper meal, use a side street or mall rather than eating five famous snacks in sequence. Fuzhou Road is a useful southern detour for books and stationery; Jiujiang Road and other parallel streets can provide a calmer break. Tenant lists change, so search the desired branch on the day.
Day, evening or rainy weather
- Morning: easier architecture views and fewer queues, though some stores open later.
- Late afternoon: combine shopping with daylight at the Bund and stay for blue hour.
- Evening: strongest signs and crowd atmosphere; allow extra time near the waterfront.
- Rain or extreme heat: use one department store as an indoor break and shorten at East Nanjing Road Station.
Festival installations, markets and façade shows are temporary. Check current district notices instead of building the visit around an old event or VR exhibition.
Metro and exit strategy
Start at People's Square Station on Lines 1, 2 and 8. Finish near East Nanjing Road Station on Lines 2 and 10 or continue on foot to the Bund. Reversing the route also works, but an eastbound walk gives the skyline a clear finale.
Do not use Nanjing West Road Station for this pedestrian route; it serves the separate Jing'an commercial district. Avoid driving, and check the current metro or station service listing if you need luggage storage.
Pairings that make geographic sense
- Classic half day: People's Square → East Nanjing Road → Bund.
- Architecture extension: Bund → Bund Origin → Waibaidu Bridge.
- Shopping contrast: visit East Nanjing Road on one day and Jing'an/West Nanjing Road with Jing'an Temple on another cluster.
