Linggu Temple

Linggu Temple, with over 1,500 years of history, stands as one of Nanjing's most significant Buddhist monasteries. Originally built in 514 during the Liang Dynasty, this ancient temple complex has witnessed centuries of Chinese history and remains an important cultural landmark.

Historical Significance

The temple was initially constructed by Emperor Wu of Liang to honor the famous Chan master Baozhi. Throughout its history, the temple underwent several name changes and relocations. In 1381, Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang of the Ming Dynasty moved the temple to its current location and bestowed it with the name "Linggu Temple," designating it as one of the "Three Great Monasteries of Nanjing."

During the Republican era (1928), the temple grounds were partially converted into a memorial for soldiers who died during the Northern Expedition. This transformation added another layer of historical significance to the already culturally rich site.

Beamless Hall (Wuliang Hall)

The most architecturally remarkable structure in the complex is the Beamless Hall, built in 1381. This architectural marvel is constructed entirely of brick and stone without using a single beam, showcasing impressive Ming Dynasty engineering. Linggu Pagoda
