Architectural Features

The auditorium's design draws inspiration from the Ming and Qing Dynasty palaces, featuring a symmetrical layout with impressive architectural details:

The plaza in front of the auditorium is divided into two sections by a traditional Chinese-style archway. The outer plaza offers an open space, while the inner plaza features lush greenery. The archway, originally part of the auditorium's wall entrance, now serves as the plaza's centerpiece with its traditional flying eaves and elegant design.

Historical Significance

Construction of the People's Auditorium began in 1951 under the leadership of Liu Bocheng, Deng Xiaoping, and He Long. The project was completed in 1954 and initially named the Southwest Administrative Commission Auditorium. In 1956, it was renamed to its current title.

  • 1989: Addition of the East Building, expanding the total area to 32,200 square meters
  • 1997: Removal of surrounding walls to create the People's Square
  • 2007: Major renovation costing 70 million yuan, including the installation of 260,000 gold pieces on the interior dome
