Tashkurgan Stone City: feasibility before ruins

Stone City and Golden Grassland justify consideration only after the border permit, foreign-passport route, G314 conditions, altitude readiness and lawful accommodation are confirmed. This is not an ordinary Kashgar day trip.

Foreign nationals use an in-person permit path

From 15 April 2026, China moved border-area permits to an electronic form, but the National Immigration Administration's English notice says foreign nationals apply in person rather than through the mainland-resident online flow. Xinjiang's regulation requires valid entry-exit identification plus the border-area permit.

Before building the trip, call 12367 or the competent office to confirm exact location, documents, destination wording, processing time, validity and accompanying children. A hotel or tour does not silently replace the permit, and approval is never guaranteed by a social post.

Choose the official amount of site

Enter through the verified Pamir Tourism Area visitor centre. The visitor centre, internal shuttle, museum, Stone City ruins, upper overlook, lower Golden Grassland boardwalk, village programme and evening event are separate.

Choose ruins only when time, wind or energy is limited; ruins plus overlook for interpretation and the wetland setting without the full lower route; or the full official boardwalk only after checking width, rest points, step-free continuity, shuttle loading and current conditions. Symptoms always outrank a prepaid ticket.

Stone City is nationally protected and Golden Grassland is protected wetland. Use open paths only: no climbing masonry, fence gaps, guesthouse-parking shortcut, private pasture, marsh or viral “free viewpoint.” A chance wedding or home invitation is not general tourist access; any visit needs a verified host and explicit photo boundaries.

Treat the overnight as safety infrastructure

Apply the same CDC altitude rules as the Karakul guide. Confirm that the exact hotel accepts an ordinary foreign passport and completes local registration, and verify heating, water, bathroom, electricity, cancellation and emergency access. For non-hotel stays, use the official foreigner accommodation-registration process; do not rely on an oxygen-room slogan.

Final verdict

AMap estimates 99.4 km / 1 hour 29 minutes by car from Karakul to Stone City. Stone City and Golden Grassland are close in map geometry, but visitors must follow the current controlled route; do not use the apparent proximity as permission for a shortcut.

Tashkurgan works as a slow, verified two- or three-day Pamir extension, not a compulsory race from Kashgar. Secure the in-person foreign-national permit path, use the official visitor centre and cancel higher or longer stops when symptoms or road conditions say so.
