Xining
Xining works best as more than an airport night. It brings Tibetan, Hui and Han histories into one manageable base and lets your body adjust before a long plateau drive. Start gently, use the museums to build context, then decide whether Qinghai Lake and Chaka deserve a separate road day or an overnight route.

Two days or three
With two days, use the arrival day for the Qinghai Provincial Museum and a quiet evening, then visit Kumbum Monastery. Three days allow a second cultural cluster around the Qinghai Tibetan Culture Museum and Plateau Wildlife Zoo, or one demanding lake day.
Keep the first day light
Recent travellers repeatedly report that brisk walking feels harder on arrival even within the city. Schedule one or two indoor stops, drink water and keep the evening flexible. Headache, breathlessness and fatigue deserve rest; severe or worsening symptoms need medical assessment rather than a sightseeing workaround.
Build coherent clusters
The Tibetan Culture Museum occupies a north-city museum zone and its halls deserve several hours. The provincial museum pairs naturally with nearby commercial streets and a meal. The zoo is a hill visit with walking and changing enclosure conditions, so it should not be squeezed between fixed reservations. Kumbum lies outside central Xining and needs its own transfer.
Treat mosque visits respectfully
Dongguan Mosque and neighbourhood mosques remain active religious spaces. Access can change during prayers, festivals or renovation. Dress modestly, follow onsite instructions and never assume that a courtyard visible in older travel posts is currently open to tourists.
