Baodingshan Rock Carvings

Baodingshan brings large narrative panels, ritual space and Southern Song craftsmanship into one coherent circuit. The density rewards context: visit the museum first or use a qualified guide rather than treating the cliff as a row of photo stops.

Route

Since November 2025, the Dazu Rock Carvings Visitor Center has been the only ordinary entrance and identity-check point. The current official sequence is visitor center → digital cinema → uphill tourist bus → Ruixiang Bridge → interpretation hall → Dazu Rock Carvings Museum → Dafowan carving circuit → Boyong Fangong exit → Baoding Old Street → Baoding Xiangshan Community parking area → downhill tourist bus → visitor center. The older return vehicle through Northern Song Street no longer operates. Recheck the official route-management notice before departure.

Ignore older shortcuts that tell drivers to park near Shengshou Temple, the museum or an informal village entrance. Visitors following those instructions after the access change reported walking between checkpoints only to be sent back to the visitor center for identity verification. Start at the official visitor center even when your group intends to skip the digital film.

Allow pauses for the Wheel of Reincarnation, Huayan Triad, Thousand-Armed Guanyin, the monumental Nirvana scene and the Cave of Perfect Enlightenment without blocking the narrow viewpoints. Many panels form linked narratives rather than isolated statues. Use the museum, the official interpretation hall or a qualified guide before the cliff circuit; recent visitors consistently found an uncontextualized photo walk much less rewarding. The official walking portion is about two kilometres, excluding cinema, museum and waiting time.

Practical checks

Confirm current admission, shuttle inclusion, last entry and any maintenance closure on the official Dazu site. Carry the booking passport. Sun, rain and crowding vary across the exposed and sheltered sections, so bring water and footwear with grip.

Conservation

Do not touch stone, cross barriers or use prohibited flash and tripods. Some panels are vulnerable to moisture and visitor pressure; obey temporary closures even when an older guide shows the area open.
